Re: 2007 Impala poor fuel mileage

I did the K&N on are equniox and it did NOTHING

Kind of off topic, but I put a cold air intake on my Tundra with the K&N filter. The gas mileage actually dropped, which I didn't buy it for fuel economy reasons so I really didn't care.

The other day I was doing a 20K mile service on my wife's 06 Toyota Solara (V6) The air filter was getting to the point of needing replaced, so I went down to the local Auto-Zoo and they had a sale on K&N's, so I figured I'd try one. I didn't say anything to my wife, she knew nothing about the K&N. 2 weeks later she tells me she's suddenly noticed that her car will go 402 miles on a tank of gas and it use to only go to 375 before being empty. (she waits until its almost dry before she buys gas). I then told her about the filter. And its consistantly getting 25 or more miles per tank.

So the K&N's do work on certain cars, but not all of them.

my parents have an 07 with the 3.5, they had an 01 with the 3.4 and my dad is always complaining that the gas mileage sucks with the 3.5. he went from 32-36mpg on trips with the 3.4 to 24-28mpg on trips with the 3.5. and it doesn't feel like it has anymore power than the 3.4

If you drove an Impala with a 3.4 and thought it was a dog, you are either 500+lbs, you only drive up the Kittaning Mountains with the rear park brake on, or the car was sick. After having put about 350,000 total miles on a Century (3.1) and 5 Impalas (3.4s) the last thing I would describe them as is "dogs". Yeah, the gearing is a little tall for my liking (very strange to still be in 2nd gear at 75mph in an automatic!), but the motors have plenty of power, and I have never needed more. And .1 liter bigger, in the exact same engine family can't make much difference!

Ok, perhaps DOG was too strong of a term. I drove my brother in law's 3.4 at the same time as I had my Regal with a very strong running 3800 and there was no comparison.

A free flowing air filter will not give you better gas mileage. They make the computer in the car add more fuel that results in a power gain but hurts the mileage

I was kinda thinking that. Maybe I could just get a K&N sticker though so the techs at Jiffy Lube stop checking it and wanting to sell me an overpriced filter :)

Well, DUH! A 3.8 is a 200+hp engine with 245lb-ft of torque, and a bunch if it at about 1500rpm. No comparing the two engines! Almost everything would feel inadequate compared to a 3.8. That motor is a great engine (might by why it was used in a couple various version since the 1960s!)
Plus as I mentioned the 3.4 Impalas are geared very tall, to acheive the 32-33 mpg rating. I've never seen more than 34, though, like timdan's dad.
