Almost all 4WD GM trucks are spec'd with the G80 option code locking rear axle. I have not seen a 4WD GM truck in the last 20 years on a new car lot without one.
That being said, what does a locking diff have to do with fuel mileage? Nothing.
The Atlas 4.2 I6 engine was a gas HOG! That's one reason GM decided to offer the 5.3 V8 in the TB and the Envoy. No real fuel mileage penalty, with more HP and torque. No brainer.
...The TB with the inline 6 should tow 4k without issue even with the 3.42 and no rear locker as everything on the Trailblazer was an additional option it seemed (again for those not as familiar as the op)...
