Have found a 206 monterey boat 1994. this will be our first boat over 14 feet. It has a inboard 5.0 alpha 1. What problems to look for with older monterey boats? This one seems to be in great shape. Stored under shelter. Winterized. And has had a new floor.

Re: 206 Monterey

This boat maker had some very serious structural issues early on around the early to mid 1990's. My brother bought a 1993 and had air gaps behind the gel coat all over the boat. One day he went to step up onto the boat and his foot went right through the gel coating. He ended up have well over 30 such spots. He also had some bad flexing causing cracks all up and down the boat, especially the walk through stairs. He had the boat fixed under warranty and they added 800 pounds of glass and resin to help fix it. The very next year the cracks were back. I understand from other members on the forum Monteray now makes a nice boat, but stay away from the early builds.

Re: 206 Monterey

And has had a new floor.

RED FLAG!!!!!! New deck means the old one rotted out! Did they tear out and replace the stringers also? Wet foam? Transom?

Some people just slap a new deck on an old rot problem to hide the problem, then a few years later the NEW OWNER finds the boat is falling apart from the inside out. Be VERY careful here.

Also, what hp is the engine?

Re: 206 Monterey

Going for a test drive on sat. The boat is on a rack at the lake. I will look it over well. I am not sure on the hp. How can you tell? The owner lives not to far from me. But keeps the boat at the lake. I have looked at new boats and like the tahoes, but a lot of problems with them. If the monterey needs stringer work what would the cost be around? Also it looks like the best way to go is to buy used and budget money for repairs. Lots of great deals on used boats but most seem to be 4cyl. Test drove a nice one the other day with a 4 cyl, with the owner and myself it lacked power. I plan to put my 4 kids and my wife on board and cruise around the lake a few days a month in the summer. Even the 6cyl boats seem a little under power getting up on plane. My little invader with a 25hp ob will shoot out of the hole and up on plane quick. The owner wants 5 grand. The boat looks like new. Has all the papers for repair and maintenance. Over all it looks and sounds well kept. Thanks for letting me know what to look for on sat.

Well, IF the deck had to be replaced then something went wrong! You NEED to find out much more about this beforetalking yourself into this one. Stringer work means tearing out the entire interior of the boat, then the floor, then all the support below, foam, etc. It;s a TON of work and thousands of dollars unless you do the work then it's 100's of hours. MANY here have done it and many would never undertake it again (me included) even for a "good deal" on a boat.

Normally though, a boat that is in great appearing condition WAS well kept - unless it's not original seats, etc. You need to ask exactly what the deck replace/repair entailed! Stringers? Foam? Engine mounts? Transom? nad also why it needed replacing. MAYBE the boat sunk of was swamped and left full of water. Something happened other than indoor/covered storage.

As far as hp goes, the seller should know, it should be marked on the engine and if you tell us if it's a carbed or fuel injected engine someone here will know about what the hp is (assuming it IS a 5.0L engine). That boat needs at least the 5.0L Id say.

Good luck on your test ride. I just want to reiterate though MAKE SURE if it has had extensive structural repairs they were done right! If not, you're in for serious headaches down the line.

i'll second that..... here's an example of not doing it right..... a 72 trisonic w/ the floor replaced.... very solid on the deck. underneath...... well, pics speak plenty.....

also has rotted stingers to go along with the old rotted floor underneath the new.... and removeing a new deck to get to the rot is a real bummer to say the least.... my project hasn't got to far for how hard a time i'm haveing removing a good deck....

Re: 206 Monterey

Those 4 cylinders probably were under powered and the 6s on the edge especially if carrying a crew. From my limited experience and reading here
I/O hole shot is a common problem even on those with brute power.
You may also want to keep in mind the I/O does require signifigantly more maintenance than an outboard.Bellows,risers,2 pumps, universals, gimble, oil changes, more complicated winterizing.Difficult service access. Some love them and some swear they will never go back.

5 grand should get you a lot of boat today. Next door neighbor in his late 70s is considering getting rid of his boat. Has taken it out once a year in the 5 yrs. I have lived next door. Late 80s GRADY-WHITE with an early 90s rude 150. Never comes off a covered lift. Figure he will be lucky to get 3000 to 3500. Just to many boats out there with no buyers, this area at least. Kind of depressing. FRED

Re: 206 Monterey

Test drove around the lake today. Boat was very smooth and had plenty of power. 250 HP With myself at 250/ my kid at around a 100 and the owner around 250. It came out of the hole and up on plane very fast. Wide open throttle with the boat speedo 50-52 my gps around 57. The boat was very clean no tears in the seats or trim. Hull velt very solid as did the floor. The hull from inspection looked smooth and no bulging. About less then a inch of water sitting in the bilge when boat came off the shelf and the same after the ride. The through hull fittings showed no discoloration. Also the drain plug water was clear. The engine was clean no rust. The boat idled very smooth and queit. Out of all the boats ive test driven this one rode the best and was very very quiet. The hull paint was a little dull in the blue. But the top was like new. The only gauge that did not function was the trim gauge. The boat rode very smooth over very choppy water. No stress cracks in the flooring or around the boat. The gell coat had a few cracks around the top of the deck arond the rear corners not deep just the gell. Boat shifted smoothly in and out of gears. The owner has 3 props that go with the boat. 2 3 blades and a 4 blade. Boat had plenty of speed and power with what was on it. Looks like this is the one. I drove a new tahoe q6i with a 220v6, this older monterey was a lot more powerful and smoother. The new tahoe when going over another boats wake wanted to pull or hook at times. This is the second owner and he did not no why the floor was replaced but has all the records and repair orders from when it was done.

Re: 206 Monterey

It does sound like a very nice boat for the price. that's pretty fast for that boat/engine combo - 57 on the GPS? I'd be more inclined to believe the speedo this time as even 52 is hauling for that one. At least you know from this that the boat is very likely not full of wet foam or it would have been a bit more sluggish I'd expect.

Did you check closely in the ski locker storage and anywhere else you can get below deck for a look? Just make sure it's not rotting from within as best you can I guess. It's tough as the deck covers the stringers so where can you get in?

Lastly, take a rubber hammer and tap the transom to make sure it sounds solid all over.

Any way to check with whomever did the floor repairs? they'd be able to answer what and how and why.

Good luck.
