225 Johnson dies at idle

I have a 1997 225 Johnson Ocean Runner that stalls alot at slow speeds. The motor will crank and run good but when you shut it down it will not idle when it is cranked back up. It is a real hassle when you shut the motor off to back the trailer into the water and the motor will not idle enough to drive the boat onto the trailer when you crank it back up. I have changed the fuel filter/water seperator quite often and run fresh gas and spark plugs. Any help would be appreciated.

paperduck,
This could be a fuel delivery problem. When the motor stalls, check the primer bulb for firmness. If not firm, you may have an air leak into the fuel hose(clamps),bad fuel pump, dirt in the carb(s).Check all under hood hoses for leaks(especially ends).Drain the carbs(at least) or remove bowls to clean-out if you feel necessary and check needle/seats.
Also, check linkage's at motor end.I have same motor but '96 and had problems w/neutral safety switch adjustment(at motor)which caused stalling while switching gears.
Another thing may be if you have an overly rich mixture(non-VRO) or a defective VRO pump which pumps too much oil,may cause idle stalling.Does it smoke alot?

Whats the rpm at idle in neutral and what is it in fwd (when its warm and stays running)in the water ? Has this come on all of a sudden or has it always done this?

I have the VRO disconnected and run 50/1 premix. I think I will have the carbs. cleaned and see if that helps. I bought this boat last year and the motor acted the same way before I had the VRO disconnected.

Well if it acted the this way since you owned it someone may have tried to set it up without any back pressure. You may just have to turn up the idle/base timing .What does it idle at in neutral in the water and in gear in the water when it stays running? the reason I ask is if it's a fuel restriction or such this is normally a probblem at higher rpm and not at idle. These big looper engines must have back pressure to be set up right.

fka **** is right. I think it should idle at about 700-750 rpm's in gear in the water.

c/6

Hooty

Forgot to add the engine must be warm. They have a what is called QUICK START.The ignition module advances the timing till the engine is up to temp (I think about 120' C ).
