I'm trying to get a 1982, 25 hp Mercury outboard to run for a friend of mine. Never worked on Merc's before, so I bought a SELOC repair manual. The manual says the 25 hp motor has a Type "J" carb. I took the carb off to rebuild it and it doesn't match the carb in the manual. Mine has the fuel pump sandwich mounted to the left side of the carb. Is this the right carb on the engine??? It looks kinda like the Type "G" carb in the manual. Any help is appreciated.

Re: 25 hp Mercury carb question

My 1982 25hp has a Tillotson"BC" carb. As you are facing the throat of the carb the fuel enters a circular cap with a nipple on it on the left side of the carb. R U useing Seloc Volume 1, 1965-1991 1 and 2 cylinder tune and repair manual??
Mine is Volume 1 - Sixth Printing - October 1994
If the same we can go by page numbers. If they are the same - my carb is on page 4-54. Identified as an "F" carb.
Maybe we can get it straight.

Re: 25 hp Mercury carb question

My SELOC manual is Vol. 1, Mariner Outboards (might be a problem there?) for 1 & 2-cylinders, 1977-1989 copyright 1989. Page 4-54 of my book shows the exploded view of the "F" carb. Mine is similar to that. The bowl of my carb is black plastic and is square in shape. Can't find anything that looks just like it in the book. Also, I can't find a pushbutton kill switch on the front of the motor or evidence that there may have been one. Does your engine have it? I can send you photos of my carb and see if it's like yours.

Re: 25 hp Mercury carb question

My shift is in the tiller handle - kill switch is an inset botton at end of tiller handle ( shift/throttle). No shift lever. Maybe? Mariner book causing prob. - don't really know.
e-mail: w_jamesk@bellsouth.net
Look at pages 4-56, 4-57, 4-58. Shows square plastic bowl as on my carb. Is your fuel inlet as I described?

ok its obvious there are no outboard motor mechanics in this forum,i have been trying to simply find out the starting procedure for my 25 merc, with a no choke carb........
look on the side of the mounting flange of your carb, there will be numbers
stamped there mine is stamped 7484,,,that crosses to a tillotson BC1B carb
good luck getting anything else,,,,my carb is obsolete, the .03 cent gasket on the top of the carb ,, they want $15.00 for it, if you want a rebuild kit
thats neet,,,,,,,absolutely no mention what is in the kit. but for 33.00 and shipping of 10.00 for a 2 ounce kit, that they could send in a first class
envelope, for normal postage,,,untill you get it you still dont have a clue what you have ordered.

you talk about a huge ripoff,,,,,,,,,,,good luck
