I just purchased a used block in good shape, which I will most likely rebuild. I am trying to find out what year it is. There are the following numbers on the side of the block near the starter - "K2310 37712 GM91" I tried searching info on the motor, but found the serial numbers are longer. Any info on these numbers? Should I look elsewhere for the serial number?

The 37712 number sounds close...

If you hunt around, you can find info on how to decode date codes, and locations of different numbers. I believe your style 6 had stuff stamped on a pad behind the distributor. Not sure if this is what you are looking at now. If you believe the head is original to the block, pull the valve cover off and look at the casting numbers there. There should be a casting number for the head, and if your lucky a 3-4 digit date code with a letter possibly representing a month.

The K2310 you got from the block sounds an awful lot like a date code...

K standing for November, 23 standing for the day of the month, but 10 makes no sense. Are we sure its a 1 and not a 7, and the 0 could be an 8 or 6?

The motor was in a boat, but unsure where it originated from, however it is a marine engine now, with the marine cam and brass freezout plugs.

... freezout plugs.

Core plugs. If they have popped out during a cold night, it's because you left water in the block and the ice has forced them out. It will also have cracked the block, and probably the manifold too.... Contrary to popular belief, they are NOT there to protect the block on freezing up....

No such thing as a Freeze plug, no matter how many folks all 'em that...

I was askin' where it came from, 'cause some of the pickup motors Don't have the block ear on the forward starboard corner to mount the motor mount...

I checked the numbers again this weekend, and you were right. The 0 was a 6 and the 2 was a 7. Therefore making it K2376 37717 gm91
So the motor is a 1976.

Thanks for everyones input and help.

Good to hear....
You don't know how many times I've looked at casting #'s, even grease/rust free clean ones, and wondered if it's a 0, 8, or 6.... :)
