Re: 255HP JetSki's & The Clueless

Uh,Uh....Thanks for the advice.

Instead of the sarcasm you should heed his advice. Do you have any idea what is going to happen in the future? You have made your self (and your "Hot" wife) a target for all DNR officers in your area. Enjoy your boating experiences in the future and do not doubt for a minute that the DNR officers have memorized your registration numbers and boat brand / type. I predict that you will be stopped and boarded at least 3 times before the normal boating season ends around thanksgiving. I will also predict that whatever you had onboard that you were worried about before will not be there in the future............. Do yourself a favor and go above and beyond on the required safety equipment for your boat. Trust me you will need more than required from now on................

Sheesh, you two don't quit do you...i for one don't appreciate having your condescending attitudes thrust at me,Do you live here????do you know my boating history? were you there when i was stopped? NO, so stop assuming i was in the wrong,I'm in my 40's have been stopped for checks MANY times, its the nature of the area, and NEVER have i encountered LEO with the attitude these idiots had.And guess what..i served in the USMC for 4 years to protect my FREEDOM and that means not being hassled by prop cops,so dont tell me to become subservient because i "might be hiding something" what a bonehead statement. I'm done with this thread and the assumptions and condescending attitude of you two.

Next time you post, remember that we read the attitude that you put into the statements as well as the jest of the thread. You're the one that put the attitude into it, not us. You say your in your 40's, act like it. No one likes to be hassled but when you are, act like a man and take it. We are playing on their playground. Remember, the guys that hassled you are the ones that help keep you safe while on the water, no matter what you think of them. It's funny how people seem to hate the law, until you need them. But if I were one the officers who you berated, I wouldn't **** on you if you were on fire. Instead of raising hell with the law, why didn't you help with the description of the boat that came flying thru the area.

It seems to me that this thread has gone about as far as it needs to go. Everyone has a different point of view on how to interact with on-water patrol folks.

Perhaps we can move on to other matters.

Re: 255HP JetSki's & The Clueless

I think we've all made our points and can take this to a very productive level - sort of a "dealing with LEO 101," if you will. To that end, I'm going to open another thread on the topic a bit later this evening.

I would also like to say that I didn't take the "thanks for the advice" comment to be sarcastic. Its sort of hard to provide an exact interpretation but I guess, "ok, lets leave it alone" would be close.

I also don't think that the OP was operating recklessly, had contraband on the boat, or was deficient in terms of safety gear. Nor do I doubt that he has his CG "tickets." In fact, all of the things being in order, provides explanation as to why offense was taken at the stop. People who try to do things right, can quite easily feel offended, when someone questions their actions and motives. I understand and can identify with the emotion - you are trying to be "right" about the way you are conducting yourself on a boat, and then someone comes on like a ton of bricks, essentially assuming that you are like the drunks and morons that we all see from time to time. It is offensive on a certain level. The key, however, is in how you handle and manage the situation.

At any rate, see y'all in the other thread (I guess I'll put it in "Boat Topics and Questions), if you are interested.

Gentle People,
Of all the threads in all of the boards that I have read and belonged to over the years, this is the first tense series of posts I have seen where the people ended up in one piece and as friends. Usually the mods jumped in - that was after others had taken sides and things had become a "rumble." Then one or more people were banned. You guys not only worked it out pretty much on your own but, you ended it with a handshake. As well, others stood back out of the way and, for the most part, let you do it. My opinion wasn't asked but, I'm impressed. I'm glad I found all of you. Well done!

Re: 255HP JetSki's & The Clueless

Neither DNR, Marine Patrol, Coast Guard or any other authority on the water have the right to innapropriately stop, detain, board or harass a boater. According to the operator, they indicated a complaint for reckless boating had been called in, yet they tell him they will board him to inspect for contraband?

If that is true, and there is little reason to think the operator is lying, then the officers are in the wrong, they would be lying and dishonest and if all of that is accurate then they would have no business carrying a badge and a gun.

Sunday afternoon...just got back from crusin' wife..20 month old daughter...Chessy retriever...great day. Was bothered by the foolish antics of a gaggle of teens in dad's 26 Searay, not observing no-wake's while pulling along a tube...cutting back & forth thru boat traffic and generally doing just about anything to become a statistic.Pulling thru the red/greens into my marina when a siren erupts off my stern, look back and its the local DNR boat with Laurel & Hardie aboard,I ask why i am being stopped while theres enough infractions around to keep the Navy busy for a month...Laurel tells me there was a complaint about a Go-Fast doing about 75 thru a congested area & i endangered some boaters....HUH? i ask if in fact he notices that my wife & child are aboard, then i ask if there was a description of the boat to which he says "No".so politely i ask if there done, so i can get my tired/cranky child back home, and nicely explain i hold a USCG Captain License, have been boating for over 25 yrs, never had an infraction, and NEVER go more than 25-30 on inshore waters,Too which he replies.".I am going to board your vessel and search for contraband" WHAT!!! Right about now is a good time to describe my wife...32 yrs old, owns a Pilate's studio, runs 10 miles a day and is HOT, not to mention very well educated..and a bit of a temper...The fun part is her good friend and partner in business is the wife of a South Carolina Supreme Court Judge..HAHA. so while Laurel & Hardi are succeeding in pissing me off, upsetting my child and causing steam to erupt from wifes ears..shes on the phone calling her friend at home..explaining the situation....after 10 minutes of searching,DNR gets a call...There faces turn RED...apologizes are offered..Declined.And off we go. As i stated when i started this rant we just got home (6:10 est)and there was a message on machine from lieutenant so&so of SC DNR,asking to please return his call at my convenience.....So should i get them fired? What do you think?

While I do agree with jay_merrill's post on how to deal with a traffic or on water stop, I have to say your situation reminds me of a time I got pulled over coming home from work on a Fri. night about 3AM. I was cruising along on a main two lane highway about 10 miles from home, through a section pretty well known for DWI stops. A patrol car came up behind me, turned on his lights and I pulled over in the first wide shoulder. I turned on my dome light, got out my paperwork from my glove box as the officer was still running my tags. He came up to the car with gun in hand, took my paperwork and at that point I asked if I had done something wrong, he didn't reply. He looked at my paperwork, handed it back to me and told me to wait. By that point about four more cars had arrived. A second officer walked up to my car, while two others walked up and around from behind shining flashlights around in the car.
I asked the one officer what all the fuss was about and what they were looking for, he said there had just been a robbery and my car fit the description. I told the officer that I had just come from work, (I was still wearing my work uniform). I then asked what the description of the car was and where was the robbery, he said witnesses described a late model, red sports car, and that they thought it was a Corvette. He said they were waiting for an officer to arrive from the next town who observed the car traveling at a high rate of speed in this direction. At that point I was pretty much amused since I was driving a green Mercury Bobcat with a 4 cylinder engine and over 300k on it. The officer continued to say that the car had been clocked at over 100mph and was now also wanted for evading police.
A few minutes later another unmarked car arrived, that officer got out and asked where the Corvette was, the first officer pointed to my car.
I only wish I had a camera when that officer heard that. The only comment I heard was "Funny looking 'vette ain't it, and it's not even green". Another officer, apparently from the town I we were in, came up and apologized for the hassle and I got a bit about them just being thorough.
They wasted about an hour of my time, but I was so shocked that they would confuse a description of a red sports car with a rusty green Mercury Bobcat, as well as the fact that a buddy of mine worked for that same force so I just let it slide. But I did make a point of pointing out to them that the car they had pulled over was by far no sports car and that it's top speed was probably not much more than about 75 mph with its 90 HP motor. Several guys I worked with who were following behind me had pulled over a bit up the road and had walked back to observe as well, they were rolling around laughing at the fact that anyone could confuse a Bobcat with a Corvette.
A few days later a local paper wrote that they had caught the thieves in the same, stolen red "sports car", which turned out to be a mint restored classic Corvette. Again, not even close to a green Mercury Bobcat.
The officers were cautious during the stop but never overstepped their boundaries. The part that got me was that it took them an hour to figure out I wasn't driving a red sports car. The driver was also described as being "short and of slight build", I have dark hair, am 6' 3" tall and weigh about 280lbs. Again, not even close.
I don't fault them for doing their job, I fault whoever hired a bunch of guys that don't know a Mercury Bobcat (a Pinto clone), from a Corvette. What kept running through my mind was what if I were driving a Corvette? Or, how many Corvettes did the pass up to pull me over?

Nice ego. Tinning and dressing down authority in their jurisdiction will earn you a-hole of the week awards. You got stopped, questioned and boarded. The patrol had reason to suspect. Sorry there was a misunderstanding, but your cooperation sounds poor and attitude worse. God complex?

Maybe next time they won't bother you. Even if you need help. You're not above the law or it's procedures even if you do have all those creds. Is it relevant that you (think) your wife is hot? Or are you trying to make the point that the patrol wanted to do a cavity search. "The fun part is her good friend and partner in business is the wife of a South Carolina Supreme Court Judge..HAHA" This sums it up for me, you think you're better than others and above the law. "There faces turn RED...apologizes are offered..Declined.And off we go."..."So should i get them fired? What do you think?" What do I think? I think you should take those officers out to lunch, accept their apology, ask them to forgive you for being so high and mighty and thank them for their efforts. Man, I should stop now....

CORvette? I thought you said CHEvette
lol I used to work with a guy who drove a Chevy Chevette... he called it his 'Vette'.
I dunno about police radios, but I've talked to people on crappy enough cell phones to make that mistake.

In Georgia DNR doesn't need a warrant to search a car or a boat. All they have to do is say they are searching for llegal game or hunting and fishing vioaltions. DNR is the only law enforcement in Georgia that doen't need a warrant to come onto your property to search (they do to enter a residence). Sometime police here will ask to look search your vehicle on a traffic stop (boat or car) if you say no, they sometimes call the local DNR and get them to go through the vehicle..

Re: 255HP JetSki's & The Clueless

Just read an interesting review of jetski and one thing caught my attention. Some skis have a regular key and a training key. When the training key is used the ski is limited so some speed or rpm or whatever. The rental place could be governing the ski. I don't know if that would be false advertising, the ski does have 250 HP you just don't have access to all of it.

That being said, a 250 HP machine should not be rented. A person who rents one has no reason to act responsible with it.

Re: 255HP JetSki's & The Clueless

The 255 Hp RXP-X and RXT-X actually have two different learning keys. One limits it to a top speed of 35 MPH and the other to 50 MPH. Normal top speed on an RXP-X is about 68 and the RXT-X is about 67. That's actually not why they are so dangerous for renters. The acceleration is crazy fast on these skis. They will do 0 - 50 in 2.9 seconds. There was a shootout between an RXP-X and a Ferrari F430 and the RXP-X beat it to 50 every time. I've ridden an RXP-X and it an awesome ski. That being said, I am really nervous about an inexperienced rider with a lot of money (they are about $13,000 skis) getting on one and thinking they can handle it. They could end up making people who ride PWC look even worse in the eyes of boaters than they do now.

Re: 255HP JetSki's & The Clueless

As a side note, I think that all Jet skiers and Boaters should be required to pass a boating safety course to buy and operate a boat or PWC. There are way too many people on the lake that don't understand basic boating principles such as no wake zones, right of way, or how to read channel markers. You have to have a license to drive a car but why not a boat or PWC? It seems crazy that all you have to do is spend a little money and you can get on the water with absolutely no idea about what you are doing.

OK, I am totally against licensing for boaters. Before you get all riled up, I myself have an OUPV license. (Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel, or "6-pack" as it's commonly referred to.

Your point of everyone needing a license to drive a car is worthless. Or are you suggesting that every car is always operated to the "letter of the law". A license doesn't make you a safe and courteous driver, it only adds revenue to the governments issuing them. I don't know the answer, there are a lot of morons out there, but I truly don't think we need a license.

You make a very good point here, actually an excellent point. I do have to disagree though, a licensing process would educate boaters as to the rules of the road so to say. It is up to the boater to follow them, but with no boater-ed the signs and signals along channels and water ways are useless. A boater must pay for a license yes, but at least they have gone through a training session and would be more aware of whats required of them on the water.

BOARDING VESSELS AND TOWING

When boarding a vessel, probable cause is required by 13 states. Forty-four states allow marine enforcement officers to randomly inspect vessels for safety. Only Mississippi prohibits marine enforcement officers from towing distressed vehicles. Fifty-two states (all but Florida, Maine, South Dakota and Virginia) allow citations for ?negligent operation? of watercraft.

It varies from State to State. Questions about your State?

Look here:
http://uscgboating.org/regulations/Nasbla_Ref_Guide_6.pdf

On page 50, is a table with all States listed and their corresponding laws for searching, boarding, and towing.

Know your rights, and those of your States ?LEA? before you blow your top.

Uh, how many states?
