280 transom replacement question?

Recently my pops and I have taken up the task of replacing the transom shield on our Volvo 280 o/d.. Now that shes apart we noticed on the exaust pipe or manifold (y pipe I think its called) that along side the main hole that goes through the transom there are 2 relief holes and we cant figure out what they do and why they were just blocked off by the transom there is a hole that looks like it would line up but it doesn't and its got a rubber plug in it. WE just want to make sure this is normal and that its not gonna cause any problems to just put it back the same way...

So to sum it up in a simple question, Will a 4cyl transom shield work with a 8cyl exaust (y pipe) manifold with 2 relief holes? What is the purpose of these relief holes? And will it effect engine performance or any crucial operating components?

The Idle relief holes are there to prevent water from backing up in the ypipe.

Did the original transom shield have the two idle relief ports?

I know this is an older thread but with the indepth work you are doing on this vessel have you thought about maybe purchasing a trashed boat and using a newer model AQ series drive in your boat?

Nothing wrong with the 280 drive but the conveniences of the later model AQ series drives would be a inexpensive upgrade with a SP drive. Worth it for the hydraulic trim system alone.

What do you need to know about the 280 upper?

The holes and plug are normal.
On the shield there should be 2 short rubber hoses on the lower end.
It's pressure relief.
The plug? No idea why it's there other than it could be used in another application??
Volvo is used all over the world and in thousands of different apps.

Thanks for your reply . and yes I have thought about the AQ series It would be nice maybe when funds permit. I cant seem to align splines into the lower unit the book I have says to raise the tilt, this seems to make it worse ive tried it at different heights it just dosent want to go in and I dont want to damage it any Ideas?
