Re: 29' Carter Safari

hey guys, great to see some more safari owners!

Gypsysoul, my boat is in a sad state, with little time it has been sitting exposed to the elements. It needs a good clean up/out before i want to show any pics of it publicly.... :(
Our main issue still remains the starboard engine water leak into the cylinders. Its not the manifold, so next step is head gasket.

no the molds have not been founds yet, ive been quite busy again recently and haven't had time to do any more searching.

Jim, do you have any more info on that possible mold owner? what/who is/are the vagabonds? Contact info?

wade and jim, what hull numbers do you have? Heres a pic i took of mine showing where to find the hull #

Hey Matt, thanks for the info on how to find the hull ID number. I don't see a tag in my Safari like the one your boat has, where is the tag mounted exactly?? When I bought my Safari, I was told that mine was #79, the last one ever made and was John Carters personal boat for many years. I am thrilled to have discovered this thread for us Safari owners and hopefully we can build some sort of on-line community for those of us lucky enough to have one of these amazing boats. I have the log book that came with my boat and it appears as though Mr. Carter took this boat to Alaska 23 times and many trips to mexico, california, etc. I am currently upgrading the electronics, canvas, electrical, etc, getting the boat ready for our own adventures. Hats off to you for all the work you are putting into your boat, I am confident you will enjoy your safari for many years to come.

One last thing. I was driving past a marina in Tacoma Washington and I noticed a Safari in a closed fenced-off area. That Safari had some metal Safari emblems that I thought looked sweet. My Safari doesn't have any emblems on them, anyone out there know where I might get a set?

Thanks again!

Hey Andrew, mine was located right above the front center window, but i have heard of it being mounted below the window as well, mine has some old pitting chrome emblems as well that say SAFARI on them, one on each side behind the last window and below the blower intake.

Heres a pic i just took, as you can see, its not pretty anymore

hey bud.......if you are having trouble with your glass hatches warping......

send me one on the bus......ill glass a new one (or more) for ya. just need to see it with the basic dimentions....and ill make a mold.

p.s. when you get the head off....look very closely at the block....i saw a few cracks between the water journals and the cyls this year...
seemed every second motor that came in was cracked.

but i really hope its just the gasket.
did you pressure test the manifold?

Great job so far guys!

So what's the planned use for the boat? Fishing, or just cruising? I live in Nanoose too, I'll have to keep my eye out for you on the water! When do you plan to launch her?

Re: 29' Carter Safari

well, you guys will be happy to hear that today i went out and starting cleaning the boat out!!! like mentioned before it sat all winter UNCOVERED:eek: and had a decent amount of water and sludge in the bilges and all over really(the only disadvantage to not having a drain plug! :p )...:( spent a few hours this morning with a pressure washer and was able to clean up a fair bit, but not quite done yet. Our beautiful wood dash unfortunately did not survive the winter, so i guess wood isn't the best thing for that dash, im going to pick up a sheet of fiberglass, and make the dash with that...

I was talking with a guy from the marina i work at yesterday for awhile about our water issues, and he gave me a few things to test before i rip the head off the starboard engine, so i might get to that this week. I also want to fire up the port engine and let it get up to temperature and make sure everything is good on it still...

Re: 29' Carter Safari

well, i made for lack of a better word weird progress on the boat today, the port engine has a lack of spark, and i didnt feel like troubleshooting that, so i switched to the starboard engine, turns out the guy at the marina knew his stuff... its not the head gasket!!!!!!!:D:D its the riser.... i got it to sputter to life for a short time today without riser cooling, beside the initial ploom of white smoke(from moisture in the cylinders) it was clean exhaust!

Only issue is fuel, the starboard engine is not getting enough(it runs as long as i am spraying fuel down the carb) and the port engine is getting WAY to much(it overflows out the flame arrestor and down the sides of the carb)

Bummer, is it a fuel pressure issue or carb issue?
