Re: 29' Carter Safari

pretty sure its a carb issue, i swapped the carbs and the problems switched.. i also tested the fuel pressure on the line when the carb was off, and it was good

Is that just a test battery for starting and checking ship's systems? If not,get another one for the other engine, and invest in a vented battery box.Batteries are just cheap insurance.Starboard engine looks a little fresher than the port engine.Did you clean up or rework that engine?

DUHHHH,I am dense tonight.I anwsered my questions by looking back through the threads.

yeah, thats just the battery i found that had a charge.. lol, ive been working on the port engine, troubleshooting some wiring issues, thats why its a mess...

the battery is actually sitting on top of the battery box, when its ready to go we will have 1 battery per engine.

Re: 29' Carter Safari

well, both engines ran today, not at the same time... but... the starboard engine is still giving me grief, i ran it for about 2-3 minutes without riser cooling after cleaning out the carb. then i shut it down, took the riser off the port engine, and put it on to replace the one i thought was bad, hooked up the riser cooling and it fired up, i started dancing around as the engine was running and cooling properly, my jumping caused my finger to slip off the throttle, and the engine still being fairly cold stalled.....

went to start it again... click.........

hydro locked again:mad:, pulled the plugs, all were dry except for cylinder 2(directly below riser) was full of water....

im going to try again tomorrow, i have put food coloring in the closed system, so we will see what that brings...

the odds of the riser i pulled of the port side going bad over the winter is slim...... otherwise its tear down time, hopefully only head gasket, and not cracked block

Re: 29' Carter Safari

well, i would like to say i am a genius and just solved a major unpreventable flaw in our cooling system, but really i am just retarded and all the problems were self inflicted..... good news in its easily repairable and cheap to fix, bad news is i just feel like the biggest idiot right now....

it all started back when we decided to flip the risers around.....
ill let this pic describe the rest....

that will stay the same, im off to get some new plates made up that will fix the issue.

just to be double sure, i ran a compression test on the engine, and all the cylinders are good... :D I also ran it with dyed water in the closed cooling, and none of that got into the cylinders

Usually matt is in charge of updating the thread, but it looks like tonight i beat him to it :p

So we started to make new block off plates out of some hardened stainless plate steel, but the milling machine was not co-operating, needless to say we got frustrated and moved onto other methods....Instead we JB welded cut off bolt shanks into the port we needed to block off.

So glad it was an easy (free) fix and not a head gasket or cracked block!

Hoping to have both the engines running at the same time for the first time ever on monday!! :D

Re: 29' Carter Safari

ahahah, whos that guy ^:rolleyes:

yes, milling machines and precision drilling arent my forte... unfortunatly i forget to take pics of our failing.....

got the parts needed to finish rebuilding the second carb today, and also got our 3rd round of riser gaskets to put the risers back together with their new plugs....

I also just officially finished High school today, so its down to business on the boat:D

anyways, im off to repair a carb mounting stud that snapped off when tightening it down, then i will be remounting the risers hopefully for the last time, and doing final plumbing and wiring... pics later

Re: 29' Carter Safari

First off, congratulations on the graduation. I am assuming (which usually leaves me red faces) that both of you graduated? second glad you found your cooling issue. I had to read awhile and catch up. I jumped ship (punn intended) and bought a airplane, and have been busy learning to fly and cleaning the plane up. plus I was working as a temp mechanic at the twenty mule team borax mine here in the desert. I will go back as a permanent mechanic on july the sixth. I will try and post a picture of myself at work on one of the 250 ton haul trucks. and the plane. I have started my safari. but have not had time to take it to the water. I took one of my Hobie cats though wed. and sailed out of LA harbour, to cabarillo beach and back. well keep up the good work and keep posting pics.

If you love what you do then it won't seem like work, you'll be better at it than those who got into it for the wrong reasons and the money will come to you.

Hey Matt, instead of hitch hiking on your thread. I started a new thread about my job and the plane. It has a picture of the plane and the trucks that I will be working on at the new job. it is in non boating section, titled Tweety and the new job. Yak at Ya latter
