Re: 29' Carter Safari

Well Matt, I don't want to rub it in (but I am) I got to take my boat out this weekend. I wanted to make it to Two Harbors in Catalina for Bucaneer days. but I had heating problems about half way across. and the weather was not playing fair with me either. so I turned back. My old girl has sat in the yard to much. I think I am going to have to pull my heat exchaners off and have them cleaned out or replace. I have been fighting this problem since I started with this boat. I have replace impellars. exhaust manifolds. and cleaned what I can clean in the heat exchanger (pulled cap and rodded out tubes). Before I go out again I am going to change both thermostats and have the heat exchangers proffesionly re-furbished. I am thinking also of teeing into the raw water return line to the manifolds and plumbing some extra water out of the system through a through hull fitting. this way I have a way to visually see water pumping out of the boat. plus extra water through the heat exchanger. By putting a ball valve in the tee I can control water flow and make sure I am getting enough through the manifolds to keep exhaust cool. other than that things went well and it was fun to cruise around the harbors of long beach and watch the seals play. Hope to hear about progress with your boat soon.

A side note. I made purchase of a 944 porsche with number two rod bearing out of it. so that is my next project. Yak at ya latter Kody:cool:

Wow, i thought high-school killed time! Just finished first semester of Mechanical engineering..... talk about no time:eek:

Not to mention, as expected i was laid off again this winter from work, so no money to put into the boat....

Anyways,
Boats sitting under its favorite black tarp.... one day it will get done!.......

Gypsysoul, Hopefully you get those heating issues fixed! Also i was just talking about Porsche 944's the other day. I was watching some insane videos of people putting LS1 engines in them, and it was giving me good ideas.

Cheers for the Holidays guys! maybe 2011 will be the big year!

Those engines synced together at cruise power are going to be music to one's ears. There's nothing like the sound of multi-engined power in perfect synchronization, especially with stacks like those. I'll be checking this thread over the next year.

IT was HARD! but as they say, first year is the hardest to weed out the weak.

Also, Brett is on holiday's in Mexico, and has just informed me that the boat taking his fishing charter is a 28' Carter Safari...what are the odds..lol i told him to take some pics and try to get the hull number!

Well, cutting down to 3 courses this semester has given room for some work!!!:D

After a few minutes the port engine fired up, and a minute later it started flooding fuel out the carb:facepalm:

Wrestled the starboard starter out to find it full of water and the contacts rusted solid.... so much for rebuilt... cleaned the contacts and it works on the bench now.... gunna seal it up a lil better then reinstall it tomorrow:rolleyes:

Not a bad idea to lighten the class load when they are trying to overload you.

We'll be watching for pics...

Man rebuilding a carb is a lost art. That takes a lot of attention to detail. I wonder if they still teach about carbs in auto technical schools?

Sure they do, throw it out and get a new one. The only place you can get a good carb job done these days is at a speed shop.

It's not that bad. clean and organized work area, good carb soak and one step @ a time, and take your time to pay attention to detail. The most important thing is to have a clean debre free unit when re-assembling. These kid's have the proper mechanical skills and willingness to anything they put thier minds to look what they have done so far. Keep it up guys you'll be on the water soon.

Re: 29' Carter Safari

Rebuilding isnt that hard, just make sure its good and clean, and replace anything that isnt 100%. Its tuning them that i dont like, nor am any good at

I found one of the metering rods bent, and the entire power piston assembly was seized up, so im going to get a new assembly, along with the full rebuild kit. Wont have time tomorrow, so hopefully Tuesday ill be able to get the carb back together.

how is the budget?

I dream of replacing both carbs with brand new ones, but its not in the budget at all. :(

looking at ~$1000 to get 2 new decent carbs

I also dream about fuel injection... but again, marine grade setup isnt in the budget(im scared to even look), and putting an automotive system in wouldn't be a good idea...
