I have a 1987 3.0 mercruiser alpha 1. about a week ago I was on the water and the boat was running great. i gave it full throtle for about 5 minutes and all of the sudden she died. didn't even stall, just like someone flipped the off switch. while getting towed to the landing i noticed i made the mistake of leaving the key on and noticed the ignition wires were burned up. replaced the wires, got new switch, new coil and condenser. tested the points by putting a screwdriver in the gap and i got spark. tested the coil by straight wiring it. no spark when grounded but it did shock me while holding the plug wire. done all i know to do. no spark from coil

Dont points wear down? Putting a screwdriver in them would only close the gap. Try replaceing the points, hell there only like 5 bucks.

the points are only like a month old. but i havent replaced them since this problem. the only reason i replaced the condenser is because i didnt know how to check if it was still good or not. also i forgot to mention the coil is getting 12 volts.

points ....the slighest bit of corrosion will ground them out. .016 will get you in the ballpark.spend the money and get the good ones

I'd buy the cheap ones and if it ends up being points, convert to pertronix and forget about it.

ok i bought a completely new tuneup kit, installed it . the engine cranked and run for about 5-10 minutes and died again. and wont fire again. i checked the battery and it was dead so i was thinking thats why it died. so i trickle charged the battery and tried it again this morning and still nothing

Did you set the point gap with the points opened on the distributor cam lobe?

Not sure if your motor is similar to mine but I had to pay attention to what coil I bought. One had an internal resistor and one had an external. If you got the wrong one i imagine electronically that could probably burn points. Just a thought. I am not a mechanic but I do have a little electronic experience and haveing a resistor in line is there for a reason.

i just went out to give it another try and while i was turning the motor over i noticed some smoke coming from the starter. when i went back to inspect i found that the positive cable from the battery to the starter is extremely hot. is this normal?

A loose or corroded connection will add resistance and cause the wire the heat up. Also - even if the ends look good, corrosion can build up inside and be difficult to see.

Yes,If you keep cranking it for more than about 15 seconds and do not let the starter cool off it will cook the cables...

Ok you have 12 on the coil. Check

:edit: Also check to see if the ignition coil has 12v while trying to start the engine with the ignition switch. If not it may be a bad ignition switch.
If you do have 12v on the + side of the coil while turning the engine over continue on.

Points are opening and closing as engine rotates Check
It gives you a little jolt when you short the point gap with a screw driver. That tells me the Primary side of the coil is working.

Doesn't tell me that the points are making contact when they close as they fall off the lobe.

While they are open on the high spot on the lobe set the points the thickness of a matchbook cover and that should be a good starting point.

Take the wire coming off the points loose from the - negative side of the coil.
Attach it to a 12v test light and the other test light lead attach to the + positive side of the battery.

Rotate the engine. the light should come on and off as the engine rotates.
If it doesn't recheck the points and get them working.

Once you have your disco test light blinking quit playing and hook the wire from the points back up to the - negative side of the coil & move onto the next area.

Now for the secondary coil windings.
Rotate the engine until the points are on a lobe and open.
Check for 12v at the coil + and engine ground (not the coil ground Points are open remember)

Pull the ignition coil wire from the dist cap and plug an old spark plug into it. Hold the spark plug threads to a ground. block is good .. carb NO NO!
Now rotate the engine. If no sparky bad coil secondaries. Can it & buy another one.
If it sparks now the secondary windings in the coil are good.

Almost home.....

Now
Check the contact button under the dist cap in the center for wear or broken/ missing (seen it)

Check the rotor button (plastic pointer part that goes roundy round) metal contact for wear and that it is indexed correctly on the dist shaft. (there's a notch for it to slide onto.) Also check for holes in the bottom of the rotor button that could pass spark to ground through the distributor rotor shaft.. (seen it too)

If all that is good, put the dist cap back on, attach the ignition coil wire & you should have spark on the plug wires.

Now go boating and come back with a story about what a great time you had..

Best of Luck..

Re: 3.0 mercruiser no spark from coil please help!!!

Thank you so much Arabian180 your checklist was extreamly helpfull. It lead me to find that I had a bad condensor. After replacing that, it cranked up berautifully. However while cleaning up my tools I let the motor idle for on the water hose for around 15 minutes. Then I went to the rear to check everything out and noticed the coil was really hot. Almost too hot to touch. I then shut it down. This cant be normal and might explain why Ive gone through 3 ignition coils. Any sugestions?

Re: 3.0 mercruiser no spark from coil please help!!!

Hey Great ! Glad you got it running.

The coils you are trying to use probably require a ballast resistor. They are getting too much voltage and overheating.

If you have two wires on the + side of the coil one is active in the ON position and the other is active in the start position. The one that's active in the ON/ RUN position is the one the ballast wires inline (in series) with.

Now, if you have only one wire on the + side of the coil, you will either have to run another wire to the + side of the coil from the from the side of the starter solenoid that goes to the ignition switch and gets 12v when starting
and place a ballast resistor inline with the existing wire that was already on the coil. That way the coil gets full 12 volts when starting and when you let off the starter the coil voltage comes from the reduced voltage from the ballast. Comprende` me Amigo ?

Now if that sounds confusing and I know it does because I confused myself a time or two trying to write and understand it myself.....

The simplest thing to do would be to buy an ignition coil that doesn't require a ballast resistor.:D

Le me do an edit here and include a couple of things that may or may not play a role. If the coil does have 2 wires on the + side and you do locate a ballast resistor already there then you may have the wires crossed on the ignition switch just trace those back to the switch and make the appropriate changes.
Another culprit could be an alternator overcharging but you would notice that on the gauges if they are functioning correctly. Check the voltage at the battery with a multimeter while the engine is running. It should be in the neighborhood of 13 - 14 v no higher than 14.5-15 which is really too high.

Good Luck.

Ok Im going to try to put a ballast resistor inline on the wire that is hot in the on position. Can I find this part at autozone? If so what do I ask for? The autozone here is no help unless they can look it up on their computer.

Autozone

Part Number: 8214
MSD / .8 Ohm Resistance Value Ignition Ballast Resistor

Price: $8.99

Features & Benefits:
For use with blaster coil. For stock points ignition system.

But if the coil doesn't have that second wire, a solid 12v while the switch in the start position it may be hard to start. Maybe not. Try it and see.
