Been searching all over to find out the answer but still cant seem to place my finger on it. I have both boats (two different locations atm) and want to make it into one. Is there any issues I would run into with using the Mercruiser out drive on the 3.0 cobra motor? I have manifolds from both boats so if I need to change anything else over I should have all the parts. Is this doable is my main question. I really want to get out on the water as fast as I can. So with out being able to see both outdrives and if the holes line up. They are both from the same year so I just really wondering if the great minds here on Iboats can help me out quickly.

Thanks

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,.... Ya, the pile of parts ya got can probably be put together to make a runner....

Ya can't just go stab a merc motor to an OMC drive, nor vice versa,...

You can dress the runnin' motor in the accessories off the 3.0l Merc, 'n run it.. with the Merc drive, on the Merc transom...

So what would I need to change over? To make the mercruiser drive onto the omc motor/boat? which accessories would I have to move??

Thanks for such a quick reply I should be out on the water in no time. :)

Nope,... It's gotta be OMC motor to Merc motor, 'n drive...

ya can't put the Merc drive on an OMC boat transom...

I was afraid of that. So transoms are different no way around that then.... are anything in the drives swapable??

My issue is that the Merc motor/drive are good but the boat is bad and the omc motor is good but drive is bad and the boat is good.

so many questions its tough with out having them both infront of me.

Ayuh,... You Can swap, EVERYTHING, Pulleys to Prop....

The cut out in the fiberglass is pretty much the same, 'n might need trimming at the most...

SoDak, there is one way to make a Mercruiser Alpha One Gen 2 drive fit on an OMC Cobra transom. That is to buy the $300 conversion kit from SEI (sold right here on iboats). But you have to have a Gen 2 outdrive.

But as indicated above, if you have an Alpha One or something older than that, you're going to end up needing to istall the OMC 3.0 in the Mercruiser boat, and dress it like the Mercruiser.

But he said the "Merc" BOAT is bad.

Just pull Merc drive, engine and transom-mount out of the 'bad' boat and install it in the "good" boat.

The cutout is the same and the studs in the transom should line up.

Ah, I missed that little line about the boat with the Mercruiser being bad.

So yep, like Bond-o and Ht are saying, take everything from the Merc Boat and install it in the OMC boat, and dress the OMC engine like the Mercruiser.

so can if I leave the OMC motor what would I all need to pull off the Mericruser for parts? By drees you mean I would mainly use the accessories like exhaust manifold and where it connects to the drive? would i have to change the intake and everything else? Like I said I don't have them both in front of me at this time so Im trying to picture everything in my head.

Ayuh,.... Do ya know the differences 'tween a Short block motor, a Long block motor, 'n a Bobtail motor,..??

The motors ya got are at this point Bobtail motors, 1 OMC, 1 Mercruiser, 'n Both GM Long block motors...

Pick whatever ya want, 'n strip it back to a Long block motor, 'n redress it with whichever ya want, to match the drive, 'n transom yer gonna use....

Nope I get the difference between Short and Long block motor. Shouldnt be too big of an issue to get everything swapped out and running. I am picking up the boat from the farm this weekend when we go down and then pulling everything off both motors redressing and setting them up to run the Merc motor and drive. Again thanks for the good knowledge on this site it should be a piece of cake and done in no time

tore everything off of the bad boat and pulled the motor and drive last night. Currently am working on pulling the OMC motor as I type. Plan to be on the water sometime this weekend. Was pondering if we can use the entire manifold on teh OMC and run the merc elbow to fit with the merc drive? also do i need to change the bell housing as well or are they interchangable?

Merc "stuff" will only work with Merc "stuff" etc.

figured that out just trying to determine my next step.

here are some pics of what I am working with

I retired Luella Jean but am transplanting her motor into my new to me bayliner.

This is what we ended up doing today and yesterday. Pulled both motors, drives and gimble house out of both boats. Set them side by side to compare They are very similar as they are the same motor but still deciding on which one to use

The transom was cut out for the OMC and I had to trim about a 1/4 off to fit my Alpha One.
All holes lined up just fine and had no issues the transom looked solid and dry so that was another thing i checked.

Here it is put back together for the most part. Merc drive and gimble installed on OMC transom cutout.

Tomorrow afternoon I am going to decide which motor I want to run. The Nerc runs alright but is getting old. The OMC fires right up. but using the OMC motor I am going to have to take a few parts off from the Merc. So far the manifold, bellhousing, and starter look like they would have to switch over. Also am wondering about my power trim hydros. the pump is on the port side of the new boat but on the starboard side so the lines dont quite reach. Other wise I would say its been smooth sailing and still hope to be on the water by this weekend.

anyone have any idea on if the main plugs (look like a 7-pin trailer connector) will work on either motor or are the wires set up brand specific as well
