3.0 stopped while running

I have a Sea Ray 17 bowrider. I was running at 3000 rpm on my way back to dock. It suddenly stopped. Sputtered like gas in carb for a few seconds. Tried restarting but all I get is a click at the solenoid. Battery seems to have power, radio, depth finder, bilge pump, enigine trim all work but engine wont crank. Fresh oil since winterized. Oil level is fine. Any thoughts? Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Loose or corroded connection somewhere. Battery cables, or main engine 10Pin connector.
Check with (With a DVM, not the engine insturments) the voltage at the red wire on the ignition switch. See if it's the same as the battery voltage.
What year might this 3.0L be?

Thanks. Not much of a mechanic but think I might be able to test that. Some people at work are saying battery or altenator, but since the other devices appear to be working fine, I don't think it's either. I was thinking a connection somewhere just not sure where.

check your ground wires to make sure they are all still connected or bolted correctly...

Re: 3.0 stopped while running

OK, wild shot here... but I had something similar happen.

Cruising along,,, sputter sputter and the engine died. When I tried to restart click/clunk. The ignition switch had a loose contact which killed the engine, then a bad exhaust flapper swamped the engine and hydro-locked it.

Doubt this is your problem as it sounds more like an electrical problem (loose or corroded cable/wire), but it might be worth the 5 minutes it takes to pull the plugs and crank the engine looking for water to come out.

check your battery connections on your starter, see if your plugs are even sparking, check your contacts and plug wires etc. work you way along the circuit to see where power stops. good luck.

Re: 3.0 stopped while running

Thanks to all who have given me things to start my search. I really appreciate it. Great web site. Not sure what I would have done without the advise. Thanks again.

I would check the connections on the back of the ignition switch (as others have said) and then go to the kill switch.(if you have one.) Check kill switch for corrosion and or good connections.

Good Luck
