take starter off and check flywheel to see where it is hitting if it is only one spot then you may have the flywheel tightened down wrong it may have hung on the pin and not flattened out on the crank, i dont know about if GM did, but some have a shim that goes on first then the flywheel, if yours did have that shim and you didnt see it and didnt put it back then it would hit also

i didnt actually see the crank move i pried between damper and front engine mount pullys were slightly misaligned maybe a 1/16" or so and when i drove a wedge between the front they lined up , maybe i just moved the damper

That doesn't sound good, what moved, or what got bent?

Hey guys before i pull motor to inspect thrust bearing , is there anything i could have done wrong can the flywheel only face one way and is there any kind of spacers i missed i bolted flywheel directly to crank or is there anything like a cover that went between bellhousing and block that i could have left off.

pulled engine checked took off main cap , checked thrust bearing and it looks great, measured endplay and its withing specs, looked at flywheel everything is tight in place, could worn starter bolts do this by misaligning starter

Yes, what moved? The dampner is pretty hard to seat on the crank and I doubt you could move the crank/dampner press fit by prying on it. Did you pry and move the outer ring of the dampner? If so not good...

I don't think the flywheel can be installed backwards. It's offset and would hit the block, plus the ring gear would be on the wrong side. I have my 3.0 torn apart, will verify and post back if this is not correct.

Is this the original flywheel and starter? Is the starter's rear support bracket installed?

By chance, you didn't forget to tighten the flywheel nuts correctly and they loosened? It happens...

A buddy and I replaced the clutch on his 70's 280Z and just as we got the last bolts tightened he picks up this part laying on the roof of his car and asks, "Hey what's this for?" Well that nice shiny new part was the throw out bearing and we had to do the entire clutch job over again,,, this time with out the assistance of a 12 pack!

OOOPS!, Guess I was a day late and a dollar short........ and you have the engine out.

Time to troubleshoot the clearance problem while the engine is out.

Is the starter's rear support bracket installed?

no rear starter bracket , i think i have the wrong starter on the motor pulled up picture of correct one and the bendix is open you can see it , the one i have had kind of a cover over the bendix till it comes out and that part is where it was hitting.
