3 prong kill switch on controls????

Please bare with me if this has been asked before, I did a search and didn't find exactly what I was looking for.

I've just become the owner of a mid 70's Johnson 70hp outboard on a equal year Sportcraft boat. I plan to use this motor on another boat I own, so I'm getting ready to do a full on tune up and cleaning. The motor hasn't run in a few years.

I noticed yesterday that on the controls there is what looks like a rubber, for lack of a better term, half plug with three female connectors in it, just below the key switch. I assume it's for a kill or emergency switch of some type. I don't however have the mating cap, or cover for it if it's a kill switch.
Am I correct in assuming that this is the emergency stop switch?

If so, I'm guessing this is where I'll need to start the project. Either find the right cap, jumper it out, or install a new switch.

Does anyone have any input?

Thanks,
Alan

Re: 3 prong kill switch on controls????

Is that tach connector on the external part of the controls?
I'm not doubting you, but I don't see any other places for what would be considered a kill or emerg. switch and there doesn't appear to ever have been one mounted on the dash. This boat is pretty sparse on controls and monitoring devices.
All it has is what looks like the original engine controls mounted where they would typically be mounted. White in color, lift up remote throttle control, forward and reverse standard style shifter/throttle, key ign. switch with push in choke, and that half connector. That's it on the whole boat.
Why would they put a tach connector in a position like that?

If you want me to second guess the guys from 30+ years ago at the now bankrupt OMC, I'm past helping with that.

If you looked at the diagram that I referenced, you will see how the two wire emergency kill switch can be attached to the ignition switch.

You should purchase a factory service manual for your motor if you are going to work on it.

Be sure to have the battery disconnected when working on the control/ignition.

Ezeke,
I didn't mean to imply that you either didn't know, or understand my question.

Here's what I know after ONE look at this set of controls. No kill lanyard attached, and an empty rubber plug staring me in the face. No other familiar looking kill switch on them, and nothing else but a key switch.

Since every boat I've ever owned (two, and one was a tiller) had a tether switch on it, I ASSUMED the rubber plug was for a tether, and NOT a tack hook up, which to me seems to be in a funny place (on the controls).

I did however look at the wiring diagram you included the link for, and thank you for that, it'll come in handy when I mate these controls to my current boat. What the diagram DOES NOT tell me is where the tach connector is physically located. It could be on the backside of the controls for all that tells me. The diagram also does show a lanyard switch, which, as I've described, I don't seem to have.

I plan to get a manual for this motor, like I do for all the items I own, and I also do disconnect the battery when I need to, but if you know what you're doing with a test light or meter, you'll learn more with the battery hooked up.

I realize when dealing with forums, people run into all kinds, but all kinds aren't all dummies........

Thanks for the help,
Alan
