On the side of my gas tank it states use 1/2 pint of oil with every gallon of regular gasoline. Reccomend outboard motor oil or any sae 30 weight regular automotive engine oil. It's a '59 18hp evinrude used only one season. I thought it was 25:1 only outboard motor oil. Whats the deal with automotive oil? Can i use 5w30 or what?

DO NOT use car oil. Today's auto oil is a far cry from what was made in 1959. Actually, so is today's outboard oil. Look for TC-W3 certification on the lable. It is available almost everywhere, even Wal-Mart, so no need to go looking for something esle.

You can actually, because that's basically what they had back then, but TCW Outboard Oil is better.

I'm pretty sure that the 30w regular oil is what used to be non-detergent oil. I haven't seen it around since the mid 80's. As the others said, TCW-3 is probably what Evenrude would have used but what the heck, why don't you call them or email them to be on the safe side. They can probably tell you the recommended blend also.

The question was can you use 5W30. My answer was NO. That stuff is loaaded with detergents that do not burn clean. Outboard oil has detergents, but they are ashless detergents.

If you are thinking non-detergent straight 30 weight, that has no detergents, so you will get ring sticking, and carbon build-up. That is what they used way back when. Check the old service manuals. Part of a normal tuneup was remove the cylinder head and scrape out the carbon.

Any TC-W3 oil will do, but for my oldies that are bushing engines, since they need so much more oil, meaning 25:1, I give them a special treat: Synthetic ester Motul outboard oil. This stuff is bio-degradable, smokes less that dinosaur based outboard oils, higher film strength, and the BIG bonus is it forms very little carbon and keeps the rings free, which is paramount to continued reliable operation. Check out IBoats, they have some fine synthetic outboard lubes availlable that are great for these old bushing engines.

In the old days, we could get Mobiloil Outboard Oil, and Chervon Outboard Oil, in metal quart cans, it was non-detergent, but left alot of carbon deposits, stuck rings, and fouled plugs when trolling. It was all we had however. I still have a full can of the Mobiloil on my shelf :)
