300 Johnson fuel issues?

I've heard that the big v8 Johnsons have a tendency to starve one or more cylinders for fuel. Is this true and if so is there anything that can be done to prevent it. I'm looking at a boat with a 1989 motor and if anybody has any other tips on these motors it would be much appreciated.

Re: 300 Johnson fuel issues?

Welcome!

The key to these motors is the set up. The fuel delivery system has to be correct as with any outboard. These have specific requirements and are different than a V6.

You are allowed no fuel restrictions what-so-ever. That includes a primer bulb. There is an electric primer for primimg. No in-line connectors or fittimgs that are not straight and a minimum of 3/8" ID.

These are great motors and worked well as designed. Set it up like a V6 and you will be very disappointed. Set it up correctly and it will live forever. Since this is a 1989 motor we assume that its set up correctly.

Yes, it will burn more fuel than todays 250 or 300's but its still a carb'd motor with a straight mag CD ignition. Very basic, nothing trick.

I've had several. I like 'em. Good luck!
