The sad thing is, if you try to up the penaltys for REAL crime, there's an uproar against it.

Has nothing to do with that state.
If you are out of state or a truck driver, your fair game.
Glad I don't go through that state anymore.

The death part... On the highway through Toronto here, if you tried to go the speed limit you would probably not survive, the right lane does 25% over and that's where tractor trailers are.
"Go with the flow" is what Young Drivers of Canada teaches. (YDC is a huge driver training program)

The kicker is that speed is not at the top of the list for accident causes with serious injury - not even close - That's a state tax and nothing more - at least they had the balls to call it a tax...glad I'm not driving in VA....that would make my blood boil...

if anyone is interested in reading about the relationship between speed and accidents....Here's a great study - public access .pdf , was an award winning thesis by 2 university civil engineering students... good reading but it will frustrate anyone who has gotten a speeding ticket lately

PDF doc:

All legal jargon, but sounds an awful lot like double jeopardy to me. Guess I won't even consider Virginia a state to retire in.

I go the speed limit. I haven't had a ticket in over six years. And only 3 in the last twenty. That's not the point.

Under the new Virginia law, a speeding ticket is six points on your record. Those six points stay for five years. Here's the kicker: You have to pay $75 PER POINT PER YEAR until the points fall off! That's $450 per year for five years! And points can be cumulative!

Just in case you can justify/rationalize the speeding thing... failure to use a signal costs $350 a year for THREE YEARS!

I have already written my delegate letting him know that I will NOT be voting for him in the future. In addition, I will be campaigning for whoever runs against him. Even if it is PW2 or rolmops!

The best way to deter this type of behaviour is to ticket more frequently, not more heavily. I travel at least 50k miles per year, maybe twice that (lots of diferent cars - rentals and business). On the open highway, I speed somewhat regularly. I have not had a ticket in 5 years.

Giving me a ticket for 3550 will certianly deter me, but everyone makes mistakes and a ticket that size is not appropriate. For instance, I may accidentally speed going downhill or when passing someone who is distracted or driving badly on a two lane road.

As a fireman, I have only worked twoi accidents I can remember where alcohol or drugs was not involved (over two years and about a dozen injury accidents). THAT should not have the same fine as speeding. Ticket the hell out of those people and put cops every half mile if you want to stop speeders.

"Although the amount of the tax can add up quickly, the law forbids judges from reducing or suspending it in any way. The tax applies only to Virginia residents, so that out-of-state motorists only need to pay the regular ticket amount. Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Texas also impose a somewhat more modest driver responsibility tax which they apply to out-of-state residents.
"

Fyi - Tax only applies to Virigina Residents.

Re: $3500 speeding ticket????!!! YOWZA!

Speeding and not using your signal are both preventable offenses, watch your speed, use your signals and you'll have nothing to worry about. That is the point. I've done it. My dad has done it for 40 years, so has my mother. My sister is at about 20 years without a ticket. My best buddy, 25. It can be done.

And yes that is the point. Speeding is breaking a law.

I don't even speed on my bike. And that thing is capable of hitting 100mph in a few seconds. I take it personally when I'm obeying the law and a cager comes flying by me. That endangers my life and personally, I'd love to see his *** get fined.

Sorry, they can make it a 5 grand fine and I wouldn't care. I went through my teen years only getting a single ticket, "not clearing an intersection completely before the yellow turned to red." Admittedly, it was my fault, although I don't think that Chevy that was pushing me could have stopped had I hit the brakes. Doesn't matter, it was 10 years ago anyway.

I even have a radar gun I keep under my seat to shoot at the cars that fly by me. I call it my "tail light checker." I love watching the brake lights! If you have a fuzz buster and are speeding, you deserve to be played with like a toy! I just wait for you to get about 1/4 mile ahead and bam, tail lights galore!

If you dont speed my radar gun is useless and you have nothing to worry about. Why this simple idea is being brushed over by everybody is beyond me.

Apparently, the simple idea being brushed by yourself is the excessiveness of the fines.

I am certain that you have failed to properly use your signal many, many times over the years. Would you like to pay thousands of dollars retro-actively? Let's not be so self righteous and sanctimonious here.
