Is there a telltale on this motor? I don't seem to see one under the cowling and there definitely isn't a stream of water shooting out like I see on modern motors. How do you check if the water pump is doing its jobby job?

The water pump is doing its job if the motor doesn't overheat. If you can leave your hand on the motor for a 3 count at temp...the pump is doing its job. I do not know, however, if your motor has a tell-tale.

Re: 3hp evinrude - 1968 telltale

i ran it today for a while, and I would put my hand right on the block where the plugs go into the engine and it was hot, but did not seem overheated. i guess i'm just afraid to run the thing and crack the head or ruin the motor by being dumb and not seeing the telltale, but I can't find the hose or water outlet, but the owner manual does refer to checking "for coolant pump operation by discharge of water from water outlet" so - I don't know if that means telltale - or if there is some other "water outlet" to check. I'd swear I remember running this motor years ago, and seeing a telltale, but I could just be making that up in my mind.

I found this and don't seem to see anything that leads me to believe it has a tell tale, but I just can't run the thing and not know how to check to make sure the water pump is working - and the owner manual says check water outlet, but I don't see any diagram or explanation of what that means, and it today's world of tell tales I find it confusing.

I don't see on any of those diagrams even on the newer motors showing any tell tales, but you know they are on the motors in the 80's no?

it should pump water out of the exhaust relief up on the leg or under the belly pan. Not real sure on a motor that new.

Re: 3hp evinrude - 1968 telltale

there are some other holes up the leg of the motor that seemed to spit some water when i ran it in a bucket, but they are submerges when on the boat - huh? I'll have to looks me up what a belly pan is. Thanks for the replies. So - you are saying on a 68 that the water outlet is not a modern tell tale?

I don't think any of the threes had a tell tale as you are thinking. If it has not had the impeller changed in awhile or you don't know change it anyway. Most of water will go out the exhaust, but the relief holes should be spitting water too.

if your running your motor on a flusher ,look at the exshuast port if it splashes out water out of the whole and your flowing out of you prop then you should be good, on your flusher run a shut off type hose connection and only alow the amount of water you need to flush , meening regulate the flow so theres not alot of splash from thr flusher and then you can see if your pumping corectly? .1960-lonestar i hope this also helps you.

Re: 3hp evinrude - 1968 telltale

it is just weird - the owner manual says after starting to check the "water outlet" to make sure the pump is working, but what we're looking at here with relief trickle or coming out of the exhaust, that doesn't match what is in the manual at all. not that anything isn't possible - I guess I never used to even think about it with this motor, but I had a real mechanic do some refirb on the thing this year, points, impeller, starter recoil, etc etc - so, I'm covering my bases to make sure I don't ruin the thing after putting some $$ into it.

Re: 3hp evinrude - 1968 telltale

I think I'm going to have to real throught all this info again tomorrow - I'm super tired and I'm sure my answer is here right infront of me, I have that feeling - but, not sure I can see it, but thanks for all the replies - I'll probably take the thing off the little boat and run it on muffs to see if the exhaust has a water stream out of it - and that is the test to see if the water pump is really working. It doesn't seem to get crazy hot when I run it, but the water is only like 40 degrees - and I might get away with it while it is cold and just burn the thing up in a few months - so, it's cool to have some ideas how to test it.

running on a flusher is not a test to see if the water pump is working as it in effect bypassing the water pump. If it is not pumping water like the owners manual says it will then put a new impeller in it.

yes, and that is the question - what is the check to see if it is pumping water? for a 1968 evinrude lightwin, 2 stroke, 2 cylinder, apparently no telltale motor.

Im not sure if this helps, but I snapped a pic of my 65 Johnson 6HP. this is where the water spits out when its running. this is above the waterline when the boat is in the water.

Re: 3hp evinrude - 1968 telltale

yea, my motor has several small holes right at that same part of the motor. seems to be running pretty good since the tune up. ran a can of engine tuner through it today. i laughed it says every 40 or 50 hours on the can - and I'm sure that was the first treatment like that in 40 YEARS - ha ha

thanks for all the tips-

There is no telltale. You have to feel the head. If it burns your hand it is too hot.

If you want you can install a tell-tale. This is what I am going to do on my 1974 25hp. I'm also installing a impeller repair kit and changing the lower unit oil at the same time.

The earlier 3hp's had a series of small holes on the exhaust housing which spit out water, and really not much of it. See picture of a 1960 3hp.
