3M 5200 WILL come off before it sets with plain ol' rubbing alcohol. Just thought I'd throw that out there. :D

Yep, discovered that one day by accident. At 98.6 degrees it sets pretty fast so you still have to wear it off your fingers.:)

Welcome to iboats!

So, you think you have the right to give a helpful tip when you've posted so few times? Hmm?

Well, of course you do, and it's a good one!:D

(Sorry, it's been a LONG week!)

Between the latex gloves and alcohol my hubby and I looked like we were ready to give passerbys prostate exams

If you get alcohol on what you are working on during your clean up.......... it will stop the 5200 from curing. Not really recommended for cleaning it up since it might interfere with where it was used

Thank you... glad to be here :)
The alcohol was solely for cleanup purposes... well at least the rubbing alcohol was ;)

For cleaning ourselves up. We'll use a razor blade for the excess on the boat.

I can't say I've ever superglued anything accidentally but it does make for a great stitch material in a pinch ;)

Instead of a razor blade to remove excess silicone on the surface of the boat. Try applying painters or masking tape on the well cured (24 hours) silicone you wish to keep, then spray a little Goof Off or similar adhesive remover on the excess silicone. Then use a plastic spatula or plastic putty knife and the silicone comes right off. Rinse the area off immediately and pull the tape. This eliminates the risk of scratching the gelcoat. I've been doing this recently to clean up joints around portholes and hatches that the previous owner of my boat did poorly.

Painters tape was an after thought... we'll drink on it until tomorrow. :D

Re: 3M 5200 tip...

the trick i use for rub rails and 5200.....is to apply the bead.......then use a plant mister with soap and water.....and hose down the bead.

then i use a popsicle stick and go over the bead.....any excess is wiped off the hull with a cloth or paper towel....

the 5200 wont stick as well to the wet soapy area. clean up is easy.....

uh......except for the fingers......which is where the rubbing alcohol comes in.....lol

I keep a bottle of charcoal grill lighter fluid handy when working with poly-sulfide adhesives like 5200. Works great for cleaning up uncured sealant and the handy squeeze bottle is nice. Kerosene basically in a handy container.

Does acetone also work with it? I know it's about the only thing to remove epoxy but never tried it with silicone/4200/5200...

Re: 3M 5200 tip...

Acetone does not work as well. It evaporates too fast.

Another little tip for 4200/5200 is too mist it with water to speed up the curing process.

My last and probably most important tip for 3M 5200.....DONT USE IT!
IMO, 4200 or LifeCaulk/Seal are better options. I have used 5200 to glue things in place much like an epoxy. It is an adhesive first and a sealant second. If your using it to seal, use 4200 or one of the others. Just because 5200 is harder to remove does mean it seals any better. If there is any sort of mechanical fastener involved, you dont need 5200. As someone who works on others boats from time to time, I wish the stuff were taken off the market!

I had a real messy time with 5200 like everyone else and actually wanted 4200, but couldn't find it locally.
