4.3 V6 1998 Mercruiser Engine knock

After trolling all day I put it the engine in neutral and as it idled down and it started to knock and proceeded to shut off. When I tried to restart it the engine got compression lock on the first crank, proceed proceed to start on the second try.The engine run great back to the dock with no knocking until I idled down at the dock again. Last year I had a coil go bad so I changed everything from the computer to the plugs. When timing the only mark on the balancer was the DTC mark so we kind of guess at the timing. First 5 times out last year it ran great. First time this year no problems until second time out. I ordered some time tape to re-time the engine. Distributor never came loose. Does this sound like a timing isssue?????

I found out what the problem was. there was water in the oil. looks like time for a new motor.

Ayuh,... You might want to diagnose Why,...
My 1st guess is it might just be the Manifolds/ Risers...

Since it is 12 years old. I just bought everything new. So problem solved.

i wish i could afford that! just curious, whats it gonna set you back? the ol girl is all original except the head, pushing 41 years old! for 120 she's still running strong.
did you find the actual problem or didnt bother?

the hull is 12 years old too, so just give the whole boat to me and buy a new one

Motor ,intake, carb, $2800
Exhaust, Full fresh water system, Remote oil filter, $2000
With all the Little parts,everything set me back about $5500 total

I think would have troubleshot it first, a pair of heads, risers and manifolds would have been WAY cheaper.
However, I'd put it into my boat simply because I have'nt found any other vessel which suits my lifestyle quite as well.
