Re: 4.3L Injected vs. 5.0L Carbed (20' Bayliner)

That being said there is a funny habit boat owners have. The what ifs! The 4.3 is plenty of motor but...what if it had the bigger motor? If your questioning the power already, upgrade, and you'll have less doubt.

This is basically my original question. I know a 5.0L is physically "bigger" than a 4.3L, but if they have the same HP, is there really a difference?

We have been looking specifically for a 5.0L (Injected or not), in a 20ft boat...until we realized a 4.3L MPI is potentially the same as a 5.0L carbed with better MPG and reliability. I'm not quite getting why a 5.0L is an upgrade from a 4.3L MPI.

Well I will go on record as saying it isn't an upgrade. Many will say that the 5.0 has more torque, which is possible, but not automatic. Maybe the best way to put it is that a bigger displacement engine has the potential to have higher torque, but it depends on many things as to whether or not it is actually making it. It would take a back to back comparison on the same hull to determine which one would actually perform better. The 4.3 should be less trouble and require less maintenance than the 5.0 as most have said. It may in fact be quicker out of the hole and faster top speed due to lower weight.

Re: 4.3L Injected vs. 5.0L Carbed (20' Bayliner)

..just realized that this thread is in the "not engine topics" section of iboats.

anyway. We have decided that a carbuerated engine, at least for us, is NOT the way to go. Now we need to decide between a 4.3 or 5.0 injected. If you are following this thread - I am going to change the topic to "Injected In/outs: 4.3L 220 vs 5.0L 260" in the inboard/outboard section of this site. look for it there.
and thanks for all the replied. We thought we had decided what kind of boat we wanted, but the longer we go without buying and and the more responses I get on this website, the more we narrow down our search.

thanks all.
