Hi Everyone! I'm kinda new to this but here goes! A pal and I decided a fishing boat would be awesome. long story short. It ran ok so we started upgrading parts to make it run great. started with the regular stuff. (Fuel related) all is well, Put a prop on it that was to small for it. oops. bought the right one! Changed Plugs, Wires, "Dis" Cap and Rotor, finally reached a plain easily. yay! Here is where the fun begins. I didnt change the Ignition parts as I am the far more qualified tech you could say. Anyway boat ran great up until it didnt. I filled it with gas at the marina! Ouch) Then alone I take it out for a spin 3rd ride after ign. parts change. I am just leaving no wake throttle up to about 20mph on plain nice suddenly without warning Chug chug berrrrrrrrrupp burrrrrp blah dead in water no restart. this is a month ago now.
I have spent so much time now diagnosing whatever is broke or not. then had the starter blow the end of its self off...
PROBLEM: NO Spark!
Heres what I found sorry about the back story. when my pal changed the rotor. He cleaned most of the debris outta houing may have loosened up the screws holding the ign sending unit in place The rotor made contact with the Magnetic reader and more than likely fried it. I got a new one off amazon it wasnt the cheapest or top dollar. The box came its said. Thunderbolt I IV dis sending unit. Is this the right one? I now had spark off the center of the coil.(weak I think) I'm not sure if I hooked wires up proper as no Instructions whatsoever came with new unit. the old one used a screw threw the Unit threw the housing with a ground coming from Ignition amp box mounted to the left on Water intake thingy.
The new one looks to be designed well but instead of 2 posts sticking out the front of dis now is 3 wires.. The black one I assumed was ground and had an end that fit perfectly onto the lower right side engine ground post so that's where it went. Now the 2 white one with green tracer one red tracer. They had ends with plugs that also had extenders with eyelet type connections. any way I couldn't for figure how that was supposed to work so I put red to red green to green gray back to - on coil, purple back to + and there respective colors off the other sides. What I didnt see was the shift cutout green with white hiding down behind... I found that after finding what I thought to be a correct wire diagram. hooked it to - on coil at first for I donno why. anyway now its half ass connected to the amp box and dis sending unit like it outta be should there had been a post for it.... (I forgot to mention I did not get to take the ignition apart the first time. there is always a rush, hurry hurry, now aspect in play.) Anyway I got it all rightly connected and am back at the drawing board. has anyone ever tried to replace old sender with new style and how did you wire it possibly if some one had a shop Diagram of the new style sender wiring diagram. I dont know this was exhausting, sorry if you feel the same.
Ps
The New starter turns the motor over way faster than the old one did. Now I've edited this so many times I dont recall if I mentioned having to change Starter because one time I tried it it made a grinding noise then would only super slow crank like a dead battery and I tried two brand new ones before I was like da fuk! ya I'm thinking about calling my guy down at the INS company this afternoon. and possibly having a plug issue!
