Re: 406 small block install

high capacity oil pan, decent sized external oil cooler, new, good quality STANDARD volume oil pump (important!), be careful with cam overlap (reversion) and don't skimp on exhaust (plan on 1500+ for manifolds and risers if you buy new).

Lots of other good, marine specific information online if you search for it. If your engine guy hasn't done a lot of marine work, do your homework...

I did a 383, but would seriously have considered a 400 if it was convenient.

I've run the 383 almost flat out (without letting up) for over a 1/4 tank of gas before without issue. Builder (does mainly marine with some race cars, etc... as well) said that for a boat I needed good oil cooling because it would get hot if I "run it". I'm not sure if they do any of the bearing clearances or other dimensions on fitting aside from meticulous balancing and bluprinting.

Re: 406 small block install

I have a friend who had a 406 SB in a 25' cruiser. The engine ran well and made good power but he kept having a cooling/water circulation problem.I don't remember exactly what it was but do those blocks have siamese cylinders?Or it may have had something to do with steam holes to the heads or not having them.I remember he kept having problems of sand settling in the block and building up then overheating.More then once he had to disassemble it and clean it out.

From what I read, both statements are true!
