Had my Sea Ray 185 with the 3.0L out this weekend. I've been working on it, tune up and the such. Hit a steady :D45 mph with four people on it! Running high and tight!

very impressive, i have a 18 footer with a mercruiser 188hp ford V8 and with three guys and a 23P prop i could only manage 43ish on a good day. You have a sweet 3.0 my friend!

Re: 45 mph! 3.0

That is a heck of a job for a 3.0.
Was this GPS speed?

I test drove an 17 foot Bayliner, Brand new boat with the 3.0.
Me and one other person in the boat and the best we could get was 42 mph on the GPS.The speedo in the dash showed 47 mph.

Re: 45 mph! 3.0

With four people on board. I have owed this boat for about 3 months and the best it would do when I got it was 32. This is on my dash speedo. I changed the plugs, oils, ran a couple of cans of Sea Foam gas additive through. Took off the air cleaner/arrestor soaked it over night and cleaned it. Bought a new prop (nothing fancy) slapped it on the arse and 87 octane pump gas and I swear shes a beast. It was up to about 42 or 43 and I adjusted the trim up while running wide open and hit a solid 45. I had about 3/4 of a tank of gas in as well. I want to take it out again with a little less weight and see. Lake Tarpon Florida this past Sunday.

global postioning system., a hand held device that displays speed, elevation and long/lat all the goodies.

boat speedo's are horribly inaccurate, more or less a ball park reading. your gps on a clear day will hit your mph on the head.

this might debunk the 45mph 3.0

Re: 45 mph! 3.0

In my Stingray 180 RX 3.0 Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 2 with a 19p SS prop, I have hit 47mph GPS with 2 people onboard. Obviously the water was calm. Since then I haven't beaten but am always able to hit 45 on the GPS. 4+ people on her and I can still get over 40.
This is at WOT and trim adjusted.

Re: 45 mph! 3.0

What year SR and engine do you have? A gps is a double edge sword. I prefer the speedo on my boat since my true gps speed is always a bit slower over 45 mph. Most smart phones have a free or included app with a gps. I prefer to think my boat will go 52 mph with my power prop when in fact it won't but I love to break 50 regardless. Truthfully I can believe 45mph even on GPS with a 3.0 even in a heavyier Sea Ray. It's the 50mph claims on non StingRays that I am skeptical of.

Hey not fair let's keep the outboards out of this. Even my old Bayliner can embarass most I/O's up to 40mph. ;)

Your prop plays a big role too.

My Bayliner with a 3.0l that I sold last week does 45mph on calm days with a 14.25" 21p prop 4 blade.

5 knots difference on the water feels fast as hell doesn't it?

Re: 45 mph! 3.0

It's a 2006 Merc 3.0 with the standard Alfa out drive. The stock Sea Ray 185 Sport. Yes I'm reading off my dash Speedo but also very happy to have increased my speed from 32 mph reading off that same gauge. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that my actual GPS speed is actually lower, however with a quarter of a tank of gas and just my wife on board I'm pretty sure it will push if not exceed what I have stated. In fact at this last outing, I'm 264, my wife is 125, my bud is all of 170 his wife maybe 145. so thats 715 give or take, + 2 coolers 0k, what another 10 lbs with ice. So lets call it about 715 Lbs on board with 3/4 of a 22 gal tank @ 16.5 gals. Don't know what that weighs. Oh yeah the Bimini top was up and you know they catch the wind. I'm tellin ya boys she was smokin hot!

The speed robber for me is my 33 gallon gas tank in an 18 foot boat (ignoring the 2900lb dry weight issue). I keep it as full as possible all the time so only on a few occassions can I really get up and go with just a little gas left. So your boat is what about 2300lbs dry, plus all that stuff above at say 900lbs with some gear. Thats 3200lbs at 45 with a 4 banger. What kind or RPM's are you running with that load compared to say just the two of you? I've gotta think you have to be losing a lot or revs that heavy.

You'd love snowmobiling then. You get to smell the two stroke smell all season on your jacket and bibs.

I would love that! I used to ride years ago when i lived up north.
Freezing fun it was!
