You had the starter tested. Did you change the flywheel during the rebuild? Did you replace the CRANK?

replaced block (long block) with everything inclued due to beautiful Crack fromprevious user. same starter same fly wheel. Could the main bolts be torque too tight. They were torqued to 85 or 95 (2 bolt main).

Re: 454 Mercruiser starting "on stand" help

I would call them since there are so many varitions of the 7.4! I did quick search just going by 1988 454/7.4 & if you gave them 2piece rear main seal & they gave you a "1 piece" (I think is what happened) you need a different starter. I can't tell you that from here!
If it was a "long block" assembled, why are YOU torquing the mains? Didn't it come with an oil pan on it?

no oil pan I also had to put oil pump and the baffle plate on and I also checkd torque. I still have block. tell me how I can tell if i had 2 piece and now have a 1 piece. I am not 100% "mechanic". The 2 Blocks are prety identical. Thanks for you helpBTW. Bobby

Re: 454 Mercruiser starting "on stand" help

Look at the *** end of your "old" engine. Is the rear main seal visible & full circle like? If nothing else, pull the flywheel again on new motor & compare the 2.
With plugs out, there is no set "effort" in what it takes to turn. That's where experience comes in. That's why people get paid! Like an engine manufacturer!

Look at the rear port side of the engine block, just aft of the cylinder head.
Should be casting numbers on both blocks.
Post those numbers.

if you had the wrong block the flywheel wont bolt up the one piece seal has a smaller bolt pattern. try putting your jumper cables straight on the starter. with nothing else hooked up to it. positive on the big post, neg on the housing of the starter and use a small jumper wire to put positive voltage to the S terminal on the solinod of the starter. if it doesn't work on the engine like this try it off the engine and see if the starter works.

Did that last night. Starter bumbs but doesnt spin the flywheel. The starter spins like crazy off the engine. Is it possible that the starter and flywheel are just not lined up?

The thing is setting right in front of you. Pull the flywheel cover and look at it.

Don is right in that you should be able to see that the starter is engaging properly.
I just ran a Volvo FI engine in the garage that I had apart --- some thoughts
(once you ensure good starter engagement)

Use real cables to the engine from the battery, if you want a good connection --- I prefer NOT JUMPER CABLES -- real cables.
You have to have good connections and a good battery.
Second -- I assume you know you have good oil pressure -- I removed my distributor -- attached drill and manual oil pressure gauge and used drill (reversable one) to ensure oil pressure before actually running engine. (mark distibutor timing of course)
for short quick run (30 seconds maybe?????) you can run without even water, if you run longer you will need proper fluids.
I had power steering pump on mine (I had to run with serpentine belt) and just short cutted into a fluid bottle and back out -- worked fine
I used the main engine connector and jumped pins there to get start and run circuit.

good luck

Re: 454 Mercruiser starting "on stand" help

putting a socket and wratchet on the front damper nut turns the engine over with little to some resistance

*** with plugs out

If you can spin motor over with a wrench on the damper, then the starter should spin it no problem. Sounds like the starter solenoid is kaput, engages the flywheel, but doesn't spin the starter.

The coil and bendix arm inside the solenoid works, but there is a copper disk in there also that closes 2 contacts when the solenoid pulls in. Seen them crap up many times. I have pulled em apart, cleaned the contacts and flipped the disk over so the clean side contacts the power contact points and they have lasted for years after that.

Re: 454 Mercruiser starting "on stand" help

Okay anyone listening that can help. I am home now and went straight ot work on attempting to get this engine started. I have taken off fly wheel cover and can ee the starter engge and stick on the flywheel. It comes out right in line with flywheel teeth and but just seems to not have enough power to turn crank more thana hair ad then it also sticks i haveto manually turn engine for the starter to retract. I went in and did what the above postersaid and followed the directionsto the exact. I then reinstalled and with only battery hooked up to starter bridged S to starter toget starter engaged on wheel but no flywheel movement. The tarter seems to hav a little more uummph and makes a wining noise now. Any suggestions??? Bobby

Re: 454 Mercruiser starting "on stand" help

Just because the starter turns on the bench doesn't mean it's got enough torque to turn the engine. Take it apart & clean it up or have it rebuilt. After all it's only 22-23 yrs old!
