Re: 454 Mercruiser starting "on stand" help
I thought the starter was removed, brought to the "store" and tested and it tested OK? Perhaps it was a lousy test and starter is NG afterall. It is "possible" that it is grossly mis-aligned just right and jamming hard when it hits the flywheel, since you need to assist it to dis-engage. It should di-engage by itself. But it should have plenty of torque to spin an engine, especially with no plugs in the engine, unless the alignment jams it up that bad (have seen that only a couple of times in 40 years), or the starter / solenoid needs to be replaced. Hard telling from this side of a keyboard.
Does the starter have the Bendix / solenoid bolted to the top of it or is it just the Bendix there with a remote solenoid?
Not seeing exactly what is there and not hearing it, but if battery has a full charge, sounds like the starter:
1. Is old / weak and should be replaced, or
2. Starter solenoid is NG and should be replaced, or
3. You have it wired up wrong, or
4. It's grossly mis-aligned and needs to re-aligned, or
4. Any or all of the above
Okay anyone listening that can help. I am home now and went straight ot work on attempting to get this engine started. I have taken off fly wheel cover and can ee the starter engge and stick on the flywheel. It comes out right in line with flywheel teeth and but just seems to not have enough power to turn crank more thana hair ad then it also sticks i haveto manually turn engine for the starter to retract. I went in and did what the above postersaid and followed the directionsto the exact. I then reinstalled and with only battery hooked up to starter bridged S to starter toget starter engaged on wheel but no flywheel movement. The tarter seems to hav a little more uummph and makes a wining noise now. Any suggestions??? Bobby
