Re: 454 questions

Well the pistons are going to be changed. They cant be stiff on the rods One has soaked over night and still is so there is no other option. I guess I will have to have the cylinders cut to match. The crank is fine. I will have it checked but the bearings that came out look fine so I expect it to be.
Adding in machine work and pistons has added to the budget so I guess i will have to keep the "peanut" heads for a season or two. No big deal but to get them working like new again may be.
Stll looking for a Chevy/Volvo bellhousing.

Re: 454 questions

Well I just got out my new digital caliper and did a ton of measurements on the crank. Everything was within spec's (according to the book). I feel safe enough to leave it and sleep good at night. Now on to the cylinders and pistons (to see what 8 & 9 mean) and if any out of roundness exists. Then to figure out what to do about it if any.

Re: 454 questions

There are 2 Issues with those Balance Adapters,......

1 is the Key Word in it's discreption,....."approximately"..........

The Other is that it Moves the Flywheel Back about 1/4".......
That Could be an Issue with some set-ups........

If you're going to Change the Pistons,.....
I'd throw the Extra Buck$ at it,+ Have the rotating assembley Balanced........
If Not,.... I'd atleast find the Right Flywheel......

Re: 454 questions

Hey Don
A little to much for what i need and it wouldn't fit in the driveway. I wouldn't mind taking a ride in it though.

Hey Bond-o
Just looking for options. Just in case a flywheel or bellhousing is not available. Its strange I saw Volvo bell housings on eBay by the hundreds until I go to look for one. Is it possible to re balance a small block flywheel for a big block? Anyone have a source for the 12 3/4" flywheel for a 454? I would not rather spend 500 bucks on a connection between the two like here. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VOLV...015QQitemZ250037344843QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Re: 454 questions

Ya know, I might be wrong , but I don't recall ever seeing a small flywheel on a 454. :^

Does that block have the straight across bolt hole pattern for the starter? If not I think your left to locate a later model flywheel housing to accomidate the 14 inch flywheel.

Re: 454 questions

Ya thats the issue I am finding. The 14" bellhousing is almost none exiting and the 12.75 flywheel is either going to have to be a custom balanced small block flywheel or I am going to have to use a balance plate on one.
Been on a lot of hot rod and Chevy forums. Most say the only chance to find a 12.75 flywheel is to find a old Camaro with a 454 in it and to get it from there. The issue with that is I will have to buy the car to get it. I have some emails out to some of the flywheel sellers but I haven't got a positive response yet.
I am going to keep looking but my options are getting smaller by the day.
On a side note a lot of folks have used the balance plate on their motors and all have said that they work fine.

RP is Right,.....

Without the Straight Across Bolt Pattern on the Block,....
You Can't run the 12" Flywheel.....
The Starter Won't Engage......

Re: 454 questions

Let me get this straight. You bought this engine, took it apart, want to "REBUILD" it, Obviously you don't have any kind of a manual, You want to half azz a 12" flywheel on it, and don't even have a clue how a Chevy starter bolts on, and want to put an electronic converted points distributor into it.
I don't even need my crystal ball to see you are doomed with this project.
