470 merc water pump seals question

it's a known fact that the seals wear a groove on the camshaft and you have to put a sleeve on the cam to compensate for these grooves when they are deep enough. question is do you have to put a different size seal on with the sleeve

No. The speedi-sleeve is very thin and you use the same seals as normal....

In Australia I know where to get them. Sorry, can't help you in Canada. Try looking on-line.

how bad does it have to be to use a sleeve? When i was feeling were the grooves are you can barely feel them but just enough to know they are there

There is a place called Motion Industries They should have speedi sleeves for you There is one In Ontario Just give them the outside dimension of the seal area and they should fix you up

You may be OK as is but , if you put the speedi sleeve on , you know the problem will not come back to haunt you . It would be like putting speedi sleeves on a boat trailer axle . It's just better insurance

Carefully measure the diameter of the camshaft and take that information with you. A digital caliper should work very well for taking the measurement, or I think a 1 inch micrometer is large enough to take the measurement. Quick tip when you put the seals in make sure both face away (garter spring side faces out) from the block, and while you are at it you should replace the crank oil seal (spring side toward the block).

yes i'm replacing everything i'm totaly rebuilding, new rings, bearings, all seals and gaskets new fuel pump, water temp sensor, oil pres sensor, the whole works and with the outdrive i just went ahead and bought a brand new one, to repair the old one would of costed me just about as much as a new one

It is a semi-permanent fix for a permanent problem: should be good for another 10-15 years.

sure the 470's have there problems but as i read many of times before preventative maintence goes a long way
