4HP Evinrude Light Twin Carb adjust alignments

I had the carburetor off my 1971 Light Twin (4HP) to check for a sticking float. (it wasn't stuck). On reinstallation, the high and low speed adjustment stems were off-center of their bores, where the splined knobs didn't fit well. I had to loosen the two carburetor attachment nuts, attach the stems and re-tighten. Could differential torque on the two attachment nuts cause this mis-alignment? The other possibility might be trash on the gasket face, but I doubt this. Any experience or thoughts on carb alignment?

Hi there. I have that same exact model. Never had a problem like what you described. I can't see mismated torque causing it at the gasket is rather thin but if there was gasket material doubled up on on side it could throw the alignment out I suppose.. Pull the carb. and check the gasket and watch the alignment as you tighten the nuts. Best of luck. Rick.

I don't recall how much wiggle room there is on the carburetor bolt holes, maybe enough to shift it slightly. It could also be what you suspect, or a combination of the two.
