I am about to replace my tired 86 5.0 with an 87 - 96 5.7 long block. Is there anything that should be aware of before making the swap? The new engine is coming with all the tins already so it should just be a matter of swapping the intake, exhaust, and flywheel.

I was also considering installing Holley's marine pro-jection kit and was wondering if anybody has had any experience with it? http://www.holley.com/700-21.asp

Thanks for the input.

86 was the year gm changed the bolt pattern on the rear of the crankshaft. If your 86 is an early motor (2 pc rear main seal), you will need a newer coupler and flywheel to fit the 87+ motor

if the new motor has vortec heads, the 86 intake will not fit

everything else should fit ok

New motor is not vortec so I should be ok there. Will have to wait and find out about the flywheel and coupler. Thanks for the heads up.

That Holley TBI kit is $1000+ ...........about 3 times what a good carb will cost you. I would wonder if it's really worth it.

yeah, if it were an MPI setup that included a manifold, I could see a potential fuel savings, especially while at no-wake speeds, but for TBI... neat but pricey

however I'm sure people spend more on wakeboard speaker systems and such in this day and age ...

found this review of the holley system - sounds like a piece of crap with poor support.... poor guy is out a lot of money

Holley part # 700-21 marine pro-jection system for V8 engines

supposedly stand alone system, but appears not to be the case.

Purchased this back in Feb and still working on it to work. unfortunately, i mainly on work on this a few times a week and some weekends when time and weather permits. Boat docks are busy and this causes lots of inconvenience. Maybe i won't miss out by next fishing season seeing how i have on this pass one. Next year i guess.

Purchased from JEGs, be aware SATISFACTION is NOT there policy as stated. Watch what you purchase from there. Read the fine prints because it had to be explained to me. Basically if you open it, it's yours. only if you were to buy it and have it sit on the shelf for less than a year, THEN you can return if you are not happy with that product. Go figure how you will be able to be satisfied. Maybe try Summit.

so far this kit has been junk. waste of good money. instructions are very vague and forget getting help on the Holley web tech support. Sent plenty emails and got two back. It will operate and run-like crap. returned the tbi and ecu to holley. they checked it out and no explaination if anything was wrong when it was returned. Still will not stay idled for long periods of time without cutting off and hestitates at high rpm. hopefully someone can help me other than Holley technical support which always states check your gound and pink wire if and when they reply after staying on hold for long periods of time. the only guy that was helpful was Tom B. in QA dept.

JEGs sent the kit with parts all thrown in a big box. Missing fuel hose that is required by the instructions but turns out they change size without providing correct size fittings. Check the kit out. This happens to be missing the fuel pump too. They did send me one. Missing the loctite sealant and di-electric grease but never received that. Since being for marine use, they provide a steel fuel filter which rust within a few weeks. That's okay though, you will be making more than several trips to local automotive store for small stuff which the kit is suppose to suppied with or will need to get it installed. Modify. If you call JEGs and tell them what you are missing it, that's what they will tell you to do.

Well, i will post again if i can get this kit to work. By the way, This kit will cost you about $1000.00 to $1200.00 by the time you have it installed. Maybe more than that by the time you get it running right if and when. I am going to take advice from Jim who got his working and try the oxygen sensor route which involves some drilling and tapping into my manifolds. Well, that will be an addition $117.00 to my stand alone system. Jim says it will work but Holley told me it will not because it's a water exhaust and does not recommend it but yet they sell the kit for it. Closed loop kit part # 534-54 with instructions on how to. Go figure.

If you consider going this route in conversion, you might want to wait and see where i go. i might just give it away because right now, it is worthless.

Will update again later.

Here is the update. Bought the sensor and additional pigtail for wire length. Still crap. Took it whole bundle to local marina and two weeks later they called to say "get this crap out of my shop or i will charge you storage fee" they spent too much time and could not get it to work correctly and was nice enough not to charge me for labor. But did end up selling me new carb. works great now. Three other shops would not even touch it. I really wanted it to work but put in too much time and money.

Summary. Threw it away would not want to sell it to someone else and have them waste their hard earned money. Never will buy from Jegs again. Holley certain items maybe but be cautious of what you buy and forget all that customer satisfaction garbage. Read the fine prints. I lost lots of money, learn from my mistakes. good luck.

Re: 5.0 to 5.7 engine swap

Huh, I posted a post yesterday and it didn't post. The Holley kit was just kind of a thought but does sound like it is an expensive piece of junk. Found out that the GM crate engine I'm getting is actually a 2 piece rear main so that's a bonus, don't need to worry about a new flywheel, coupler or intake. I'm going to switch out the freeze plugs, replace the cam with my marine cam in my old engine, new exhaust manifolds, replace the head gaskets, bolt on my new edelbrock intake and carb and I should be all set. I get a great deal from my local GM dealer so the price is definitely worth it to do the extra work to make it boat worthy.
