My old AQ225E has been replaced with a 5.7, retained the original distributor, carb, etc.. Runs good but the intial timing of 4 degrees just seems a little low..even idles a bit choppy and stinky..Wondering if it should be jumped up to maybe 8 degrees initial to smooth it out and help in starting also.. Keep in mind, it runs fine and all but being around cars all my life, I know that advancing the timing some aids in smoother idle and starting..???

the AQ271C that I had base timing was 8DBTDC. after I went vortec heads and a different cam, I was running 10 DBTDC with 24 degrees advance.

which heads are you running on your 5.7?

8 degrees if you have an 1986-1995 VP with the 64cc heads.

.even idles a bit choppy and stinky..

Ayuh,..... Stinky as in raw gas smell,..??

If so, that's a carb/ choke problem changin' the timin' won't fix,.....

Btw,.... I'm with Scott, 8?Btc sounds 'bout right,....

Just stinky when starting, not idling. I shouldn't say it idles choppy, it idles smooth but not as smooth as one with more inititial advance like I would think it should have..but im used to old cars..

remember, boats aint cars. cars can run with a lot of timing advance because they are not under load. boats are under 100% load all the time. to much advance on a boat motor and you end up with detonation damage (holes in pistons and bearings smashed).... think of a car going up hill in sand pulling a trailer, while stuck in top gear
