If it's a single prop, use 30W engine oil, if it's a DuoProp, then it would get gear lube.

That oil will be fine, just let it drain for a while, it's won't need flushing.

You will need just less than 3 guarts.

Don, i put 2 1/2 quarts of oil in the drive, but it didn't show up on the dipstick. I removed the cover on the upper unit and poured the oil on top of the bearings and let it drain down. I didnt run it when i did, I dont know if that was the reason why it didnt show up or not, but didnt want to over due it. Should i add more?

Since my name is'nt Don, I'll try to answer this

Yes, add more oil. No need to take the top cover off, add thru the dipstick hole!

You don't fill that drive through the dipstick hole or by pulling the top cap. Do you guys just make this stuff up as you go.
The dipstick goes down throught the hollow shaft in the upper gear box. It takes a while to fill up and show on the stick.
You fill through the fill fitting on the back of the upper gear box, then wait for the oil to fill the vertical shaft.
You also need a new top cover gasket or you will have a leak.

Forgive my lack of knowledge Don. Is the the filler fitting the bolt on top of the drive with a screw type end on it and a little hole in the middle of the screw?

Had to look this up in my VP manual, was worried I'd been doin it wrong for all those years?

Oil filling
1. Install the oil drain plug with a new O-ring.
2. Tilt the sterndrive to the full up position. Remove
the fill plug and fill with approx. 2.2 liters of gear oil.
See Technical Data. Install the fill plug with a new
gasket.
Tighten the fill plug to 35 Nm (26 lb.ft.).
Lower the sterndrive and check the oil level with the
dipstick. If necessary, Top off the sterdrive with oil
through the dip stick hole.

3. Install the shift mechanism cover.

He already had 2,5 quarts in there, all though they where wrongly added I assumed the oil was in the drive, filling up thru the dipstick hole is what I normally do if it's missing a little bit of oil.

By the way the fill plug is behind the shift cover!

The thing is, I filled mine up the wrong way as well, but there is still no oil showing on the dipstick, and I ran the boat last night and the gears were slamming into gear. Could this be my problem why they were slamming although my shift cable was a little hard to move? Also, I am lost right now, cause now I dont know how much to put into the drive? Your manual says gear oil, but I used Don's instructions and used Castrol SAE 30 Heavy Duty Oil, I used 2.5 quarts as well, how much more oil should I put inside?

Re: 5.7 with 280 vp gear oil?

You can do it like the manual says, or do it like my pictures below. A bit easier without all the raising and lowering the of drive a bunch of times. Just make a funnel with an elbow and attach it to the drive.
Fill with approx. 2.5 quarts and slowly add more till you get on the flat of the dipstick. The drives vary in the amounts they take, so go by the dipstick only, and allow time for the oil to settle and get to the dipstick. PS, it takes a lot longer in cold weather.

Thanks Don, can I trouble you one more time in filling up the tilt unit as well? I was told to use ATF when filling the tilt up.

Unless you have a 280T, you don't have a pump. Post a picture of your outdrive and transom shield,, that will tell the story.

IF, you actually have a 280T outdrive and have a setup inside the boat that looks like the picture below, then you do have hydraulics, and yes you use ATF.

Re: 5.7 with 280 vp gear oil?

#1. I have filled a great number of these drives. Easiest way to get it right is to pump it up from the bottom thru the drain hole until it comes out the fill hole. Reinstall the fill plug and the dipstick and you won't loose much fluid when you disconnect the pump. Works every time the first time.

#2 Please tell me you have put a drive shaft bellows on it. If not, save LOTS of money for a drive rebuild, new bell housing shaft and bearings, new u-joint assembly and possibly a new bellhousing. Removing the engine, drive and bell housing.
