I tried winterizing myself this year and won't do it ever again, at least the pull the sparkplug part. I was pulling well trying to pull all the plugs and spray fogging oil in each cylinder. The plugs were longer than my socket so the socket barely grabbed some and wouldn't grab a few at all.

Now I have 2 broken plugs back in. Does anyone know what plug to use to replace it in my 1997 5.7l v8?

Is there an easier way? (yeah, pay someone to do it)The plugs are on the bottom of the engine. Very hard for 6'4" 285 guy to get to.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Plug sockets comes in a variety of designs and sizes/lengths. Appearantly your socket was not right for your engine.

You can check recommended plugs at www.championsparkplugs.com or www.ngksparkplugs.com

by specifying your engine details.

Re: 5.7L Mercruiser plugs

i have a 305 mercruiser that i did a tuned up in early in the spring. i did a plug change and used autolite double platinum plugs (#APP25). this is the platinum equivelant to the champion used in most 8 cylinder GM block mercruisers. the platinum plugs gives off a hotter spark than the plain old copper core plugs. my motor runs great on them.

Re: 5.7L Mercruiser plugs

If you have a carbed engine, fogging is easy and no need to pull the spark plugs. Just warm up the engine on the hose until the choke opens and remove the flame arrestor. Then spray a can of fogging oil in the carb with the engine running, when it is done stall the motor by closing the choke plate.
Now in the spring, I do like to replace the plugs after the 1st start since the fogging oil fouls the spark plugs. I have no problem getting to all the plugs on my OMC Chevy 4.3 V-6. I know some engines are a bear to get to though. What I do is remove the divider panels in the engine compartment and the base of the back seat, then I can sit in there and do everything. I unscrew the panels when I do the winterization. I replace them and leave out the screws over the winter. Start up in spring, then do my spring tune up. then replace panels, hopefully no need to get in there again until the next fall winterize!!

I have a 1996 5.7LX. I tried all kinds of sockets, to no avail...go to an auto parts store and look for one of those T-Handle, Universal Jointed spark plug wrenches. Works awesome. The problem is the ex. man gets in the way of other sockets.

I had a plug on my old 5.7 that took 2 swivels to get at it.Make sure to use a sparkplug socket as it will prevent breaking the plug and try a swivel.Charlie
