Re: 5200 curing in dry desert heat???

I don't think there's need for concern. A couple years ago I dropped the boat in and realized I forgot to fill a transducer hole below the water line. I leaned over the transom with a fingerfull of 5200, reached underwater and covered the hole. The boat stayed in the water all weekend without leaking. I tried to remove it to do a better patch but couldn't get if off.

I don't think you need to do anything to it, it will cure.

This is from a 3M brochure on their marine sealants, pertaining to 5200:

This high-performance polyurethane
adhesive sealant becomes tack-free in
24-48 hours, and completely cures in
5-7 days with no shrinking. The seal
is extremely strong, retaining its
strength above or below the waterline.
Stays flexible?allows for structural
movement. Stress caused by shock,
vibration, swelling or shrinking is
effectively absorbed. Has excellent
resistance to weathering and salt
water.

Re: 5200 curing in dry desert heat???

I asked because my boat is stored in my garage where it reaches well over 100F and the humidity is less than 10%.

5200 does do better when the humidity is higher. Without moisture it will skin over and not fully cure. Your idea of spraying with a mister is the correct approach. Hit it with water from a spray bottle a couple of times in the first couple of hours after application and you should be fine.

You need to keep the 5200 in a moist environment or it WILL NOT cure for a long time out here in the desert. Misting is a bad idea as it will leave droplet marks in the 5200, first hand experience talking here.

So what are you sealing up with the 5200?

I've used a trash bag (plastic sheet) and a wet towel to create a humid environment. For small parts I've put some water in a bucket, then suspended the parts above the water. Anything to keep the 5200 away from the water, but in humid air. The hardest thing is to keep things from touching the 5200 while it's curing, tough when covering it with plastic....

I have a mini swamp cooler for the garage that would work great for curing 5200.

I am using the 5200 on transom fittings, like tow hooks, eyes and tabs. I don't mind it there are droplet marks on the 5200, as long as it gets fully cured.

100+ degrees with 10% humidity? Hose down the floor 2 or 3 times a day. Instant sauna!

I'm super jealous of 10% humidity btw. When it's 100 here the humidity is almost invariably 80%+

It will cure :) ..

As long as you prepped it right and applied enough 5200 to the fittings..it will cure. In or out of the water.

Just hope you dont ever have to replace anything that you bed down with 5200.

Prepped with 200 grit sanding and acetone.
I don't plan on removing the 5200 bedded items :D
