Re: 55 johnson year?

Welcome to iboats.

I am not familiar with that code. I know if it is later than 1980 it will have an apha numeric code like my Johnson is a J120TLCL and my parts numbers are usually 6 digits. The big dogs on iboats will give you a better hand. Again welcome.

looks like you found the serial number, only dealers can reference serial numbers. is there a id tag on the transom clamp of the motor?

it looks like the plate was knocked off. the boat is a 76 seastar 16' tri hull. so i figure the motor is around that year too. but i saw there was several manuals for the 55hp around that year.

If you post a pic, I can tell you whether it is a '68 or '69.

awsome! is ther a distinctive feature that would separate them. or would the manuals and parts be the same?

Near as I remember (asking a lot) they were pretty much the same. Go to the Evinrude site and compare parts. Anything in particular you're concerned about or just in general?

well i just bought it off craigs list. the guy told me the carbs needed rebuilding. i have never worked on a marine engine but alot of automotive. everyone tells me i should get the service manual for it and also the parts list. so i guess its just in general.

Agreed. The OE service manual will pay for itself in the carb job. Very simple, don't be intimidated by what you see. It looks way more complicated than it is.

Post as you go thru the carbs. There's a trick or two you can do that's not in the manual.

The starters were different from 68 to 69 and the flywheel as well, 12 tooth versus 9 tooth....the thread below will detail this.
So, if your starter gear has 12 teeth, you almost certainly have a '68 TR-10.
If you have a 9 tooth, it is probably a '69...although there would be a slim possibility that someone MAY have put a 9 tooth flywheel and starter on a '68.
There are also a few differences in parts between the 2 years, but the on-line parts descriptors are there for both '68 and '69 so you can double check the part numbers if you are in doubt.
