johnson experts,
I just bought a '57 18 hp and it ran great wide open after carb adj. but was lean coughing on idle horribly. I looked under the cowl and noticed oily residue under the flywheel. Took off the flywheel, points plates, etc. and poured carb cleaner into cup-like part around crankshaft above the bearing and turned the crank with the nut. It was gasping horribly through that bearing seal on the crankshaft. Now for my question--Is the seal/bearing available anywhere, and if it is, do I have to break the block apart to fix it? Or is it now a boat anchor? I have another '57 18 hp and it runs good but this new one actually sounds like it has less wear as far as the bearings in it. I love old Johnsons and am especially partial to 18's so I'm willing to do the work to fix it if I can just get the parts. By the way, how do you shim the plate under the flywheel so it doesn't wobble?
Thanks for your help,
JBJ

There's a tool to remove that seal. Most any E/J dealer will have it. It'll screw inrto that seal and pull it out. Then you press in a new seal. No big deal if you have the tool.

Just curious--I think the '57 18 hp is one of the best small outboards ever made for reliability and ease of working on--what do you think? Also, any idea how to shim that stator plate?
thanks again,

There's a thread here someplace about dinging the support ring to tighten it up. Before you do that, is the retainer plate beneath the support ring right side up? It goes with the flat side up, tapered side down. Also, is the brass bushing in the center of the armature plate tight in the plate? They had a way of coming loose. It is cast into the aluminum and should be one solid piece.

JB, I agree with you. I have several of the 18's and love them. The power to weight ratio is great. They only weigh a few pounds more than the 10's yet have way more power... Parts are easy to come by and easily available. I have a '61 and a '66 down at the dock right now on 2 of my boats. The '66 is the smoothest running engine I have.

Engine Blade & Prop in Milwaukee is a good source if you can't find it locally or in the Iboats Mall.

i mostly take those old seals out by making 2 little holes in de seal (very carefully) and then screw two screws in it and pull it out :D

works for me, never damged crackshaft and never got residue in the bearings ;)

Thanks for that advice, will try that. What did you grab the screws with to pull it out? Did you wrap wire around them and put something under the wire and tap on it with a hammer to knock it out?
