Re: 6 hp evinrude outboard help please

maybe im reading this wrong, but the points should be always closed until they get opened by the lobe on the points cam, ( usually where the keyway is located), thats where they should be gapped to .020. ( !!!plugs only fire when the points are open!!)

yep after reading and looking at the points and turning the crank to see how it works with the points, i figured it out and gaped them.. as i said earlier, its hard to read something and imagine it until i actually see it.. but thanx.. just gotta find time to try and start it again.. twins + pregnant wife = not much me time..

OK im getting aggravated now.. still not even a spudder..

points checked, cleaned and open at the "top" end at .020

rechecked spark plug gaps

carb is getting fuel

and still have good continuity all the way to the end of the plug wire

so why isnt it firing up? im so lost

anyway to post pics of what is going on under the flywheel? better yet a video of if it? any chance the flywheel key fell out when you first pulled it off?

shouldnt i have some sort of gas on the spark plug after pulling on it like 30x.. maybe the carb has a clog in it?

its the small crescent shaped piece of metal that fits in a notch in the crankshaft, and the slot in the flywheel has to slide down over it. a small but crucial part.

plugs should be wet if fuel is getting to them with no ignition.

Re: 6 hp evinrude outboard help please

try testing the spark plugs with a tester, 3/16 gap should be blue, if not suspect the following: spark plug wires, both magnetos, condensers, and points................

on to fuel, CHANGE all the lines to make them E-10 friendly???? check fuel pump, check fuel line and ball, is vent open on the gas tank, and finally rebuild the carb.............. could be tons of varnish in there, Ya know ?????

i have one as well, mine is a 1968, awesome engine ...................

Re: 6 hp evinrude outboard help please

yea pulled on it about 30x and didnt have/smell any gas on the plugs.. so ill check the fuel system next.. saw fuel comming out of the choke side of the carb so maybe there is a clog somewhere.. looks like someone put in a new fuel pump before i got it.. but it was sitting a while before i got it.. i just hate messin with carbs.. havent had much luck with them on an old 7.5 sears i have..

have the plugs gaped at .035-.040 ish... or should they be gaped at .020 the same as the points?

E-10 friendly???

blue to match the color? you need to verify spark. wheres the pics of whats going on under the flywheel? jmo....but you need to correct one issue before you move on to the next. ( any compression numbers yet?)

PLUGS should be gapped to .030. (POINTS to .020)

Re: 6 hp evinrude outboard help please

everything under the flywheel "looks" good, and the key is still in the crankshaft. if the ignition is working well, you should be able to get spark to the plugs just turning the flywheel by hand.

Re: 6 hp evinrude outboard help please

update..

new fuel lines
cleaned the carb which wasnt that bad
took apart the fuel pump which was really clean
still no start or spudder
tried starting fluid and didnt get anything
have a feeling i need new coils and condensers cause i wasnt even getting a spark from turning the crank when i rechecked the points
anyone wanna spend 50$ on me

unless im an idiot coils, condensers, and wires is my last option i think

Re: 6 hp evinrude outboard help please

odd that you would not get spark on at least one plug? are the magnets ok in the flywheel? ( should pull a screwdriver in from a half an inch with a bit of force) more testing on the ignition ? ( still no compression numbers)
