Im a first time poster and i need a little help with some motor problems. I bought a 60's 18hp evinrude fastwin last year for about 300 bucks. I used it all last year and the beginning of this season but last week I ran the prop into a shallow sandy area where small rocks where mixed in and the motor would rev and the prop wouldn't spin much. So i messed with throwing it in and out reverse and forward gear and got it to start running well for a couple hours of fishing and it seemed fine.

So i take it out the next week and it runs good gets up to top speed and is running fine. Then i run into a patch of weeds while trolling and slow the motor down to pull some weeds off my rapala and i here it pop out of gear. So i get stranded about 2 miles against 15-25 mph winds and end up getting a tow in by a help full guy fishing with his kids. He says it sounds like i sheared a pin, but what ive read is that these motors don"t have shear pins. I have little to no knowledge about boat motors but I am pretty handy and would love to make this motor work again because I am on a low budget.

So basically do you guys think this is repairable? and if it is can I do it myself or should I take it into a shop

There is a couple of things that worry me about the motor it has two mounting brackets toward the front of the motor that are not holding anything and I dont know what would go in the spot. Also on the area right above the prop there is some gear lube coming out of a area that does not look right, ill post the pictures bellow.

Also it seems like the prop is too lose its pulled away from the housing and has some slack to move forward and backwards. However when i was stranded and i trying getting it going it seemed like the prop was locked and would not move.

Thanks for any input or help.

Wow, those are some super sized photos. They would make nice posters:D:D

The best thing to do, is pull the prop and see what you find.

pull the cotter pin and nut off of the prop. slide the prop off. there is a pin behind the prop. the cotter pin is to keep the nut from comming off.

i would think its a spun prop hub if the shear pin is OK,the rubber in those prop hubs don't last forever,an don't worry there is nothing missing, that's a excellent motor you got there.

that exhaust just looked a little weird to me because it is offset a little. does anyone have a clue how to find out what year it is?

You can tell the year by the serial number. If I'm reading that serial number correctly (18702) it's a 1967. Here is a site which has a parts diagram for your motor.
www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php
I have a 1963 Johnson 18HP. I believe those empty mounting holes you were talking about could be for an electric starter set-up.

The starter mounts to the right and lower of the pull start.........(tiller side)...................the mounting holes on the third pic down on the left side is for gear shift linkage to mount to.........needed if you had a steering console and shifter/throttle control......................

great motor. I still miss mine.

Prop problem is a shear pin. Carry spares.

I think those brackets inside the motor are for a starter?

flip it over to the shifter side and you got it. remote shift and throttle are mounted outside the engine cover. take a shot facing the side, and you will see either the hook or the mount where the hook was for remote stuff.
