Im a first time poster and i need a little help with some motor problems. I bought a 60's 18hp evinrude fastwin last year for about 300 bucks. I used it all last year and the beginning of this season but last week I ran the prop into a shallow sandy area where small rocks where mixed in and the motor would rev and the prop wouldn't spin much. So i messed with throwing it in and out reverse and forward gear and got it to start running well for a couple hours of fishing and it seemed fine.
So i take it out the next week and it runs good gets up to top speed and is running fine. Then i run into a patch of weeds while trolling and slow the motor down to pull some weeds off my rapala and i here it pop out of gear. So i get stranded about 2 miles against 15-25 mph winds and end up getting a tow in by a help full guy fishing with his kids. He says it sounds like i sheared a pin, but what ive read is that these motors don"t have shear pins. I have little to no knowledge about boat motors but I am pretty handy and would love to make this motor work again because I am on a low budget.
So basically do you guys think this is repairable? and if it is can I do it myself or should I take it into a shop
There is a couple of things that worry me about the motor it has two mounting brackets toward the front of the motor that are not holding anything and I dont know what would go in the spot. Also on the area right above the prop there is some gear lube coming out of a area that does not look right, ill post the pictures bellow.
Also it seems like the prop is too lose its pulled away from the housing and has some slack to move forward and backwards. However when i was stranded and i trying getting it going it seemed like the prop was locked and would not move.
Thanks for any input or help.
