I've got a 1962 Seaking (Gale/OMC) 40hp that I picked up on a starcraft project boat last weekend. When I went to look at it the guy assured me that the motor was fine, just needed a carb rebuild, had new iginition.... blah blah blah. Well Im not exactly an expert on outboard motors, although it wouldnt have taken an expert to figure this out but I didnt see it. When I was there the guy gave it a few pulls and it turned over. Today I pulled the plugs to see how the spark was, tried to pull it over and it wouldnt budge. Ended up dropping the lower end out of the motor, first clue that this wasnt good was when I undid the drain plug for the gear case and nothing came out. Here is what I found.

why would you even want to put that musiem pc on a boat, for the price of the gas that thing world use compared to say a 1990 40hp motor you could get the 1990 motor for free, I bet that old motor would get 2 gals per mile

You might be surprised what you can salvage from that. I wouldn't reuse the bearings but the gears and clutch dog may be OK. Those are the REAL expensive pieces, if you can find them.

You can probably get a lower housing at: www.tcoutboard.com

Hey, HEY HEY Bite your tongue, there young man. This is a classic piece of equipment. These oldies are worth fixin' up and getting many more years.

Those gears may work out great. I would clean the bearings up the best you can and see if you can get anymore life out of them.

Make sure those gears aren't pitted too:cool:

That is a great motor no matter what anyones says.

I have a parts motor that I could pull the internals from if you are interested. It is a 67 HP but the same as yours internally. I have a 63 40HP that is a great motor. Let me know what parts you want and what you would like to pay.

Would you possibly believe that the 1962 and 1990 motor get about the same mileage?

Ut oh! So I was messing around a little more with it last night, I was trying to get the shaft to turn (main shaft that goes through the leg into the pinion type gear), well it wouldnt budge, sprayed it with a some lube and kept working it back and forth, well the gear came free from the shaft and I pulled it out and thats when I saw all the little roller bearings falling out of their spot.

theres only about 10,000 motors out there that you could grab a lower off of.looks exactly like a johnny/rude lower of same year.if im not mistaken the tag on your motor should say the gale division of omc.

youd be suprised at the fuel mileage of those motors if propely maintained,or he might be like me and have a classic style boat and wants it to look period correct.at least thats why im going from a 1982 90hp rude to a 63 75hp rude.

Yup, this motor is a prime candidate for a used lower unit, I wouldn't even bother trying to salvage anything, i'll take a look in the shed tonight, may have one.

Re: '62 40hp - Bottom End is Toast - Help!!!

Thanks for checking the stock piles guys, I know someone will help me save the old girl. :D

On a happy note I do have good spark, maybe he was telling the truth about having that stuff replaced, think Ill pop the flywheel just to be sure though.

Going out in a little while to pick up a compression tester, figured Id check that out before any money is put into this beast. Will any compression tester work or do I need a certain size for these motors?

Its slated to go on a 1969 Startcraft Falcon, a newer motor just wouldnt look right. If I had my way Id be putting a '57 on it, best looking motor made IMO.
