Re: '62 40hp - Bottom End is Toast - Help!!!

Found one that the guy says is from a 33hp, the case looks identical to mine. Will that work on my 40hp?

i would think so ,your lower looks the same as my 1970 evinrude 33hp as a matter of fact.

i have the 40, but i've having trouble getting it to run. it will back fire from time to time but wont hold. Do you think its the points that are messed up?

the carb is clean and has a new kit in it.

i have a spare parts engine that came with the boat and i think i have 2 lower ends. Idk if it will fit.

Seriously, thread highjacking isn't cool, this is a lower unit issue unless of course you are offering up your lower unit to CBGALE :)

You added to your post after I replied, I'm not upset, just stating a fact, jeez I posted a smiley face to indicate.

Anyways I just went to the shed of magic, 1961 Evinrude 40with what looks to be a good lower from the outside, PM me your address and we can discuss. I'd need to pull it off and check everything over the weekend of course to make sure it's good. I wouldn't want to sell you a POS to replace it.

Pretty sure it will, the 61-62 gear case looks the same, maybe F_R would know, ping him a PM to verify. Plus you will have a much easier time finding an evinrude/johnson case over a gale, the bolt pattern looks identical.

i think what your seeing is evinrude /johnsons attempt at superquite.i dont think that has any real bearing on the actual mounting of the lower to the top, mind you ive been wrong before, just ask my ex-wife,lol.

Re: '62 40hp - Bottom End is Toast - Help!!!

Hey I just swapped drive shafts to shorten my 62' 28hp. I used parts from a big twin 63' 40hp. The lower ends ARE NOT interchangeable. The BIG TWIN has two water pipes and a COMPLETELY different footprint (bolt pattern). The lower drive shaft and other guts "look" the same.

Chances are fair (I think,) as long as you don't get the "super quiet Big Twin" (with the external lower cowling) that it will work. My 28 would probably fit but I'm using it. I would be willing to part with the lower drive shaft w/gears from the big twin, but the thrust washer (next to the prop and rear seal) looks as bad as yours.

I'd say take a piece of string... wrap it around the mating surface to get the size of the housing (tear drop)... If it's the same on a replacement, it should work. A big twin 40 has a bigger housing and won't work.

Well jeez if this is "superquiet" stealth technology the price just quadrupled :p

If worse comes to worse I can pull the gears, prop shaft, clutch dog and lower skeg. I'm thinking the lowers will swap, just waiting on the god of older outboards to chime in.

Why, he's got a 61 gale 40hp, is the 62 evinrude 40 hp lower not the same??? You were talking 28hp and 40hp in your post.

Yea, you'll need a lower unit off of a 25, 28, 30, 33. All these motors have the single wall type lower units with the single water tube style water pump. The later 35's (58 and 59) and 40's with the super quiet suspension will typically have a dual water tube set up and as I recall, they do have a different bolt up pattern.

Not that "super quiet" model.

You missed something... I only used the shift rod and the upper drive shaft. and I had to Micky Mouse the drive shaft woodruff key.
They would not even come close to bolting together.

I'd swear all the gears "look the same" but you better talk to God.

F_R where are you???;)
