K this is my confusion. Just looked at my pdf of the 40 and 35 motors, the only diagram for that style lower shows the double water tube. Hmmm

Yea, that's true BK, but the 57 Big Twins and Larks, plus the 58 Big Twins are the older single water tube style. The 58 Larks and all 59's are the dual set up. What you see is a flub up on the printers of the diagrams.

Re: '62 40hp - Bottom End is Toast - Help!!!

im thinking you need the 33 lower or same model run .case in point, did you know that the waterpump housing and impeller off of a 1956 30 hp johnson will fit and work on a 1970 33 hp evinrude?i do, as i used them on mine so id say that the 33 lower would be the same as yours.as pointed out you have the single water tube system and omc used those lowers on several models for many years.i guess the super quite was a differnt animal .here,s a pic of the 33 with the 1956 pumphousing and the 56 mechanical adjustable prop on it.

So heres what I think Ive learned so far. That housing was used in the mid/late 50's and in 60 or so Johnny/Rude switched to this other housing (the quiet one), but in 65 they started using that old housing when they came out with the 33hp. Meanwhile Gale was using the same housing the whole time.

Did the gears/bearings/etc remain the same?

CBGale, I replied to your PM before I realized there are two pages to this thread. Anyhoo, it has been pretty well covered and beat to death by now. Bottom line is pretty much you need a 33-35-40hp Gale, Johnson, or Evinrude with the single wall midsection and single water tube (not recirculating/thermostat cooling). The old 25hp motors will bolt up but have different gears and bearings and are not strong enough for a 40, so don't go for one of those. I'm not sure about the 28hp. If you luck upon a 1968-up, they are a better unit with detents on the clutch dog. Remember, J/E went back to your style lower unit in 1971-up----till they changed again and went to prop hub exhaust. Also, keep in mind you have a short shaft. But they can be converted.

Thanks F_R, I picked up that 33hp off eBay for $90 delivered. Im assuming by everything that it will mount right up. And Bk hold of on tearing into that one you have, I will give you a shout if anything is needed once I get the 33hp and check it out.

No problem, figured you'd go that route, hense why I didn't touch the 40 today :) I did however score my own score, 1968 Johnson 6 hp with weak spark on one cylinder, $50 bones, I offered to fix it for the guy , ok, I'll take it off your hands!

Re: '62 40hp - Bottom End is Toast - Help!!!

Got the lower unit delivered yesterday, poped the top off it and it looks pretty darn good in there. Needs new seals but was expecting that. I was trying to turn the main shaft that comes down the leg and I could hardly get the thing to budge, really had to get a good grip on it to turn it. Took the cover off the water pump housing and checked out the impeller, after doing that it was spinning free as could be, also noticed that the plate the imperller sits on had a dent in it about 3/8" wide and 1" long.... what would cause that? Its all getting replaced but was curious.
