OK so I decided last week to get the boat in the water this weekend. Spent a couple nights last week doing stuff like cleaning the boat, checking trailer wiring, cleaning fuel tank (ended up with too much rust so replaced old metal tank with new plastic one), changing lower unit oil, replacing impeller, replaced fuel filter, probably more stuff I'm not thinking of right now...

Saturday I turned the motor over by hand (slowly) after pulling the plugs. All was fine. Shot a touch of oil in each plug hole and put them back. Turned over by hand again slowly. Ran compression test, all within specs. Squirted a bit of 50:1 into the carbs (no fuel tank hooked up), put on a battery and bumped the starter (just to see if electric was working). She fired up for about 1 second - I turned it off, although it was dying anyway. Put it into a test tank and ran it on idle for about 5 minutes after putting on fuel tank.

Took it to the lake on Saturday afternoon, again fired right up at the dock. Took it out and it would only run a bit above an idle. Adjusted the idle screws after it warmed up and could get about 1500 RPM but anything more than that it would fall on its face. Took it back to the dock and ran about 1/2 can of seafoam through it- would rev fine after that. Put other half can into the tank. Re-adjusted idle screws and had fun on the lake.

Did it again on Sunday-

Not bad for a boat that had not been in the water for 12 years. :)

Boat ran so well and was so quiet on idle that we ambushed a couple fishermen fishing by the launch- they didn't hear us coming and had to hurry to get their lines in! Kind of funny!

Everyone loved the turquoise 16' '67 Silverline. Got a few comments on how clean it was and how well the motor ran. Funny as it had sat for 10 years before I bought it almost 2 years ago... I was almost expecting a major overhaul before it would run but she ran just like she was put away last fall, not the fall of 1996.

it is a wonder you did not burn it up, not servicing the water pump. change the impeller before next run.

Yes I did change the impeller, and it ran nice and cool (I ran it in the water dockside for 10 minutes or so before taking it out also). I kept checking the power head temp while running every few minutes too just to make sure. I was able to put my hand on the head and it was warm, not hot, the entire trip. I was worried about the thermostat being stuck closed after so long but I did not have a replacement thermostat. I have one on order but it has not come in yet.

I am pondering going through the carbs, but not sure if I really need to as it runs well now- although I may be able to get a bit more top end with a carb rebuild. Have to check the lower unit for water after the two days of use- it didn't have any water contamination when I changed it last week but it just sat there. I figure the seals may have gone now that it had some use. I would rather check than have to rebuild it!
I have a second '67 60HP Sport Four I picked up (heard it run, but the lower unit has no reverse) for parts, just in case. I am still running on the old plugs, although I have a couple sets of new ones. They looked clean and had proper gap so I left the old ones in. I was afraid they would get fouled when running so I didn't replace them. Was going to put in a new set the second day but forgot.

That is on the list of things to do this week:

Check lower unit (drain and refill again)
New plugs
Price carb kit and order if reasonable

Also need to do some work on the trailer. My safety chains are toast, and on the trip to the lake on Sunday a weld broke on one of the trailer side rails. Also need to replace the rachet straps that hold the boat down- I used a new set on the boat and the old ones, but the set I have do not fit in the factory location ( I ran the rachet straps around the trailer frame though).

Do have speedometer hook up if so, What is your top speed with your motor?

It does have a speedo- however I found out this weekend it is not currently working. Going to look into that this week...

I will E-Bay the carb kits- that is where I got the impeller and the thermostat. :) Come to think of it I got the FSM there too, about a year ago!

Re: '67 'Rude 60HP Alive again!!!

My 67' sportfour ran like a top since 1982 never ever stranded me.
This year early spring was out walleye fishing and had a little trouble running rough and stalling while trying to idle, I figured it's time for a complete tune up, I gave it a compression test and found #4 seriously down on compression only 60lbs while other 3 were 90lbs. I don't know what the cause was, if it was a slow burn or all at once but the cylinder was scuffed really bad rings were gulled so bad couldn't save it. Luck was on my side when I found a complete non running 67' 80hp speedifour, did a comp check and got just shy of 100lbs in each cylinder so I bought it for 50 bucks winning bid. had to travel to michigan to get it about a 4 hr trip is all. Did a complete change out of powerhead and now I got a 80HP speedi disguised as a sportfour, I'll tell you there's not a whole lot of difference, it's nice and quiet and plenty of power just like the 60hp. My little MFG 16' V goes about 32MPH now, just like as with the 60hp I'm using the same 10x91/4 prop flirting with 5000RPM exactly like the sportfour did. That sportfour is a great package always got compliments on it's quiet running, alot to do with the engine cover and insulation though.
By the way, what were your compression numbers ? just curious as both my engines never could get a 100psi reading.

Mine 90 Psi Cross All Four Cylinders.
The Power Head Was Replaced Sometime Before Got It.
It Was Out Time And Motor Would Only Run 5mph.
Lower Unit Went Bad Seals And Bearing On Drive Shaft Above
The Pinion Gear . I End Up Replacing The Lower And Resealed
I Found A Chicago Raw Hide Seal That Replaces The Oil Seal .
It 35.00 Seal You Get For 8.00 Bucks.

I Had Crack Seal On The Bottom Engine - This Made Very Very Hard To Start. -

I Have Rebuilt Almost Everything On Motor Took Whole Thing Apart Threw Some New Main Bearings In. All New Gasket , T-stat, Carb, Ign , Whole 9 Yards.

I Get About 25mph On The Lake - Seems Like Take A Minute Or Two To Get On Plain And Get Going.

I Have Different Prop , I Need To Switch Back To Org. Prop 10x91/4
Add The Finns Back To Lower -seems To Help Get Plain

Re: '67 'Rude 60HP Alive again!!!

I also got 90PSI +- 2PSI on all four. I will try and fix the speedo this week but fixing the trailer is going to take priority. Replacing all the bunks and rollers Saturday afternoon- paying for a slip overnight so I can put it in the water on Saturday, play all day then work on the bunks/rollers Saturday night. :)

All I did to the trailer so far was fix the wiring- connector was corroded past use and wasn't the 7 pin I have on my truck anyway. Also checked the bearings and re-greased them and aired up the the tires. I also was shocked that after 12 years of non-use only had one bulp fail to light when plugged in.
