OK so I decided last week to get the boat in the water this weekend. Spent a couple nights last week doing stuff like cleaning the boat, checking trailer wiring, cleaning fuel tank (ended up with too much rust so replaced old metal tank with new plastic one), changing lower unit oil, replacing impeller, replaced fuel filter, probably more stuff I'm not thinking of right now...
Saturday I turned the motor over by hand (slowly) after pulling the plugs. All was fine. Shot a touch of oil in each plug hole and put them back. Turned over by hand again slowly. Ran compression test, all within specs. Squirted a bit of 50:1 into the carbs (no fuel tank hooked up), put on a battery and bumped the starter (just to see if electric was working). She fired up for about 1 second - I turned it off, although it was dying anyway. Put it into a test tank and ran it on idle for about 5 minutes after putting on fuel tank.
Took it to the lake on Saturday afternoon, again fired right up at the dock. Took it out and it would only run a bit above an idle. Adjusted the idle screws after it warmed up and could get about 1500 RPM but anything more than that it would fall on its face. Took it back to the dock and ran about 1/2 can of seafoam through it- would rev fine after that. Put other half can into the tank. Re-adjusted idle screws and had fun on the lake.
Did it again on Sunday-
Not bad for a boat that had not been in the water for 12 years.
Boat ran so well and was so quiet on idle that we ambushed a couple fishermen fishing by the launch- they didn't hear us coming and had to hurry to get their lines in! Kind of funny!
Everyone loved the turquoise 16' '67 Silverline. Got a few comments on how clean it was and how well the motor ran. Funny as it had sat for 10 years before I bought it almost 2 years ago... I was almost expecting a major overhaul before it would run but she ran just like she was put away last fall, not the fall of 1996.
