I've had this I6 for a few months now and I finally got to water test it today. Was a big failure! I wanted to test on a weekday at a deserted launch with a full grown helper in case I had troubles, but with the weather I had no choice but to put her in the water on Sunday afternoon at a busy dock with my two little girls as helpers.
Engine starts and idles like I've read these classics like to. They want you to pump the snot outta the primer and want the fast idle lever up, and choke even if its 90F on a cold engine.
Prior to water test I did compression test, 100lbs or so each but couldn't reach the bottom cylinder. New impeller and lower oil. Link and sync according to (seloc) manual and Clams' sticky Tower of Power instructions. Engine starts and idles fine (I know, I know, I hate reading this over and over again too) Idle screws out 1.5 turns. I got the idle to around 900-1000 on muffs and 800-900 in the water. Everything in link 'n sync instructions made sense and was adjusted. Carbs open and close together from min to max. Max spark advance 34-35 degrees, initial pickup is at 5-6 degrees with timing light. Spark is evident at cranking speed as tested by simply hooking timing light to each cylinder. The secondary carb lever opens carbs to wide open just after max advance. Carb opening is verified to WFO by moving control lever at helm.
The engine seemed to be ok on muffs but of course that means nothing. On the water here's what happened:
Engine idled fine, fast idle lever only needed for starting. Went into gear at idle fine. Putted along in the no wake zone fine. But it just seemed like something is stopping it at 1/4 throttle. No sounds like straining on a dead cylinder or anything, no odd sounds at all except with the throttle down you only just get the bow starting to rise. I had my 12yr old go back and squeeze as hard as she could on the bulb but no change. This on a 16 ft Grew. Not a heavy boat. Prop is a 3 blade 13 inch 21 pitch for those who are wondering in that direction.
So it was a flop. Go out.... put around at 5mph with the throttle pinned. Go back around into line to pull out. Nice first outing LOL.
I'm guessing one of two things. All 3 carbs have idle circuits running fine but clogged mains/emulsion tubes?. (Not likely, but yes I guess I need to clean those carbs) Or ...... a two stage ignition system?. Low and high speed CDI?
not sure about that one. I don't see anything in the manual
I really don't think its the idle mixture screws but if I knew everything I wouldn't need to ask opinions now would I? LOL. Who's got a suggestion?
