Hi All,
I have a 1969 Evinrude Sportster Big Twin 25hp. Ser #25920-E08015. I've had this motor for about 15 years and it pretty much sat the last 5. I decided to sell it and wanted to change the impeller. When I dropped the LU I noticed thsat in the impeller kit they give you three new screws for the water-pump housing. Must be because they're stainless and soft because I broke two of them! I thought the housing might pop up off the broken screw shafts, but it seems a little tight still. is this a common problem? I'm not worried about getting the rest of the screw out but I have to get the housing off first. I don't want to do any damage to the housing or plate. Does this or should it come off now that the screw heads are gone. I have enclosed pics. Anybody got a good solution?
Thanks in advance.waterpump1.jpgwaterpump2.jpg

Nah, never happened to me before! :)

Real pain in the but. At least your screws did not break off in the gearcase. You should be able to get vice grips on them still. Dont try again until you soak them liberally in penetrating oil and heat them or they will break again in a worse spot.

Likely sealer on the housing? Rock it a little, should come off.

I have them soaking now. I figured I could spend the time waiting refinishing the board on a kicker bracket I picked up the other day. I did rock it but I'm gonna give it a day or so before I try it again. I'll put a little heat on it too. If they do break off in the gearcase, what is the thread size in case I need to drill and tap?
Thanks

good news is those aren't blind holes the screws go in...sorta bad news is there's a lot of meat < aluminum casting > to heat up to get enough heat to help....I'd heat the lower unit housing area that last bass *urd goes into for a longer time and see if you gain any ground..as already stated..patience is a virtue

Trying to alternate PB and heat. I'll let it soak awhile then heat and rock. I even tried putting upward pressure on the housing and tapping the center of the broken screw with a punch. I don't want to tap it too hard though because I can see myself mushrooming that screw in the hole and then I'm really in trouble. if I do break it off flush, and I think I asked this already, what size are the threads so I can re-tap the hole?

you may just have to take 1 of the others you've removed to an auto parts place and hopefully they'll have the screw-in type thread cards where you can match it

Got the darn thing loose!!! after soaking it for a few day's I heated the heck out of that side and stated prying. It finally popped off and I used some vicegrips to ease the broken studs out. Cleaned everything, did some prelims and fired her up. It started but wouldn't stay running. I finally figured out that the fuel tank fitting on the tank side was leaking air and the bulb was going soft. It's alway's something isn't it? :)

Re: '69 Evinrude 25hp water pump problem

I used anti-seize and chased the holes before installing the new screws. I did some tinkering with the carb settings and she is running great now! Someone is going to get a great motor and I hope they get as much enjoyment out of it as I did.
