i have been a lurker on this site for six months or so, thank all of you for the information. i read through posts for three hour without any luck, so here is my question. i have a 70 horse Evinrude, E70TLCOS on a skeeter bass boat. i went fishing about a month ago and the motor got hot. it didnt sieze completely but cranked hard. took it home and pulled plugs and dumped mixing oil in the cylinders while cranking it over. it ran after i put the plugs in it and seemed to free up. i was stoked till i pulled the plugs and had water in the cylinders. at this time i had 90,90 and 100 on a compression test. i then took the powerhead off and pulled the head and the exhaust manifold off. the pistons and rings looked good as well as the cylinders. i put new gaskets in as well as a new thermostat and overheat sensor. it then had 120 psi in all cylinders. i also replaced the impeller and everything ran great. i took it to the lake and started it in the water and let run for ten minutes or so at 1500 rpm, checking things over. it would slowly lose rpm and then die. when i would try and start it it would act like it was siezed up. after bumping the key i could get it to crank and start but could tell something was not right. i brought the boat home and pulled the plugs and water came out of the bottom hole as well as small spray out of the other two. i dont believe i have solved the problem, there is something i missed. the manual doesnt go into this in great detail so any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance

Did you retorque the cylinder head after you ran it and it cooled off?
Did you recheck the compression?
Did you check the cylinder head and make sure it was flat?

checked the head bolts, they are torqued(60 to 84 inch pounds doesnt seem like alot) compression is within three psi of 120 on all three cylinders. no i didnt check the head or the plates in the exhaust to see if they were true. i honestly thought they would be cracked when i took them apart and was surprised when i couldnt find any. i also was sold a carbon reducing spray made by Evinrude to spray the engine after i got it running.

Re: 70 hp evinrude water in cylinders

wanted to update. took the cylinder head off this week and had it checked, it wasnt true. The machine shop machined it true and i put it back on with a new head gasket. ran it for about 15 minutes on the muffs and it did the same thing, getting water into the cylinders. Took the powerhead off this morning and took the exhaust plates off and still cant find cracks or anything abnormal. Does anyone have any more ideas? Is there a place where these blocks are prone to crack? What am i overlooking? Need advise, I'm missing out on the bite!

Are you sure about those torque specs? Usually a cylinder head torque is in the 25-31 FOOT lb range. Could you have used the torque spec for the cylinder head cover instead of the cylinder head?
I don't have a manual in front of me or I would double check for you.

i misread the manual, it calls for the cylinder head to be 18 to 20 foot/lbs. The exhaust cover screws are 60 to 84 inch/lbs.

Since you have the powerhead off, pressure check it thru the water jackets. That will pin point the leak.

A good marine machine shop has the fixtures to do that, no big deal. If you need help contacting one just let me know. Be glad to help.

Re: 70 hp evinrude water in cylinders

Have to wait till monday, theres a boat shop close to where I work. Is there a common area to look for cracks? Could it be in the exhaust plates? Thanks all of you for the help. There is alot of knowledge on these forums to help new guys like me! the exhaust baffles me, three different plates and the three gaskets are the same. the water flow through this is a maze.
