Hi,

I have 72 50hp Johnson Hydro-Electric motor and controls. When I put the shifter in netraul the throttle will not move all the way back to the idle pin. I can manually move this back? Do I adjust the throttle position at the motor or controls? I did notice a black nob which turns on the throttle cable in the motor, do I turn this?

Thanks,

Fuser

Hey Fuser.....how's things in Ontario?? :)

Probably we need to talk about idle rpms a little for we go moving anything around.

What are the rpms at idle in gear? We don't know if the engine is new to you so we need to find out what the engine is doing.

That black knob at the engine on the throttle cable can be used to set to pull the throttle lever back against the idle stop....what you called "pin".

But if you could give us some info on what the engine is doing or not doing would be great. I've notice that sometimes when an engine starts idling rough, folks will up the idle to make it smooth out. Not really the best thing to do cause the higher the idle, the worst beating the gears take when the engine is shifted into forward or reverse.

So....if you could give us some info, we, the fine wrenches who habitate this forum, can better help.

Thanks!

Re: 72 50 hp Hydro Electric Throttle Adjustment

Hi OBJ, Ontario was hot today and with a hydro strike looming we may be buying some of your electricity :) .

I have had this motor for 15 years and have only had to change the power pack. The engine has two problems:

1. The motor will not go into gear. This is due to the switch in the control box being broken. Thanks to another post I was able to put the motor in and out of gear by disconnecting the green and blue wire. Reverse works as well. I am trying to find used controls as the part is $160. I read in another post a 3 way switch can be rigged up but am concerned about the saftey aspect of this solution.

2. When I put the boat in neutral the throttle is not moving all the way back to the idle stop and is idling mutch to high. Unfortunatly I can not test the RPM's as my boat does not have an RPM gauge. I can manually move the throttle back to rest against the idle stop and the engine idles at what sounds like an appropriate rpm.

Thanks for any advice!

Fuser

HA! I just retired from a fossil fuel plant here in Ohio in January......costly stuff...electricity.

Use the trunion (black knob) at the engine to see if you can get the throttle lever back against the stop. It's possible the cable may have stretched some from years of use.

Keep us upto date on what's happeing.

Thanks OBJ, I turned the trunnion and this did not help with the idle position. I did have to put it back to the original position to have the throttle move to the full throttle position.

I did try to adjust the throttle cable in the controls. The adjustment screw/nob will not budge. I tried WD40 and also tried to heat it up. The only other thing I could see to do was to move the (forgive my terminology) screw with the black nob which stops the throttle at first stage back (this could go back about 3/4 of an inch). Would I then need to adjust the trunnion in order to get to the full throttle position?

Thanks,

Fuser
Fuser

I would take a good close look at the control cable itself Fuser. If things are going awry all of a sudden and the cable is old, you may just fight yourself to death trying to get things back to the way they was. You also might consider taking the control box apart and clean and re-lube the moving parts. Summer is here....we don't need to be fighting controls....real bummer when yer trying to cruise and have a good time.... :)
